Did fibromyalgia get worse after surgery? My cousins dr is discouraging surgery because he said it makes fibro worse.

i have fibro and i am 2 1/2 weeks out and i haven't had a flare up or anything. Sure the pain in the first few days will hurt a tad more than the average person. but overall im happy i did it.

Fibromyalgia can be controlled more without the use of medication if you are healthy and not overweight. I should have done this sooner.

Please tell your cousin to seek a second opinion. i know many "spoonies" that have had wls and are so happy and feel so much better.

i have not heard this. i have heard that for most people, losing weight reduces the number and severity of flare ups.

i think bypass can make certain autoimmune disorders worse because it affects the GI tract, where the immune system "resides." i have a friend with fibro and scleroderma and her doc has strongly recommended the sleeve over bypass, but the surgeon hasn't decided yet (based on his research) which procedure he thinks she should have.

Thank you! Yes his dr was also talking abt bypass but had no info on sleeve. But his dr also told hi. He needed to weigh 300 lbs to even qualify so think maybe this dr is not very fond of wls

I have fibromyalgia and I have been better post WLS. I do have flare ups, but I don't typically need a daily medication anymore. I usually just take the meds as needed. Now if I'm really stressed, it flares up, but other then that I'm much, much better!

Thank you! My cousin has had multiple back surgeries and has gained almost 100 lbs. Is very curious about surgery and it's helped my back pain tremendously losing all this weight. It's good to hear yours is better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
