Another gas related question...

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forums, but I'm so glad I found this site, the information from everyone's experience is invaluable.

Anyway, I had my surgery this past thursday (April 12) and I just want to make sure that what I'm experiencing is normal...

I've been having a lot of gas, not really coming out the rear end, but feeling the need to burp a lot without really being able to, which gets quite uncomfortable and almost constant gas-y noises coming from my stomach area...Just had my first BM today, and took some gas-x, which has helped a bit, but I just want to see if everyone else has had these issues.

Thanks!

Erica :)

I'm not hungry, actually I feel quite full...I'm on a Clear Liquids diet until tomorrow and then i start Protein Shakes and other stuff. Mentally, I'm starving! lol I would love to binge on many, many things right now...I really didn't realize how big of a change this would be mentally, but I'm looking forward to seeing the pounds disappear!

Erica, I was just banded Thursday too and I experienced exactly the same thing, even down to my first poo today! It's awful, but I'm told it will pass!

During laproscopic surgery they usually pump gasses into your belly to seperate your organs and make room for the surgical tools. There are some RN's on this site who will hopefully chime in. I remember this stage so well. The first night I would pass a tiny amount of gas and rejoice but the bib "breakthrough" was 36-48 hours out. My husband took me to my post op 2 days after surgery. His car is really low to the ground and I was so uncomfortable but when I stepped out of it I passed gas for about 4 seconds! I can only wish the same for you, and soon. I took Gas X chewables (and still do) . Gas seems to be an ongoing problem. This is not based on medical or technical knowledge but I picture my empty stomach (the large part) as being a vessle to form/collect gas.

ME TOO!!! Banded on 4/12 also. Had my 1st poop yesterday. But having the same gas issues. More now in my back region than anywhere else. Feeling Hungry TOO!!! I think I now know what my DH means when he says " There's more room on the outside than there is on the inside"-- so Let -R-Rip. I have been. :)....not so lady like, but certainly feels good. Don't know what to do about that tomorrow at work. Any suggestions?

My doctor said gas was normal and to incorporate more Fiber into my diet. I have been banded for about 6 months now and still have frequent problems with gas. Gas-x doesn't always help. Sometimes it will last for 2-3 days before I get any relief. Grrrr!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
