Anyone get banded at 190lbs?

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone got banded at 190lbs, if so how's it going? Have you lost anything? What time frame.

I believe I've seen a few banders who were under 200 lbs. But usually they're BMI is probably higher than yours due to their height being less?

Your questions are a little odd though? Most everyone loses about 50-60% of their excess body weight and some lose 100%. A small fraction are not successful. Time frames vary from 1 year to 2 years.

Here's a couple of links to folks who have done very well:

Hi,

I'm in the 190s and planning to have a band because of back problems. I am also interested to talk to other people who have had the procedure under 200 pounds. I am worried that it maybe won't work as well for me as it does for heavier people...? There is a girl on YouTube, lapbandchicka, who has some good videos. I know she had the surgery at a BMI below 35, but I don't know what her starting weight was, though, because she never says.

Exactly! I weigh 190lbs and I'm getting banded on Wednesday the 28th, I'm terrified I wont get results due to not being big enough. However it needs to be done.

My BMI was only 37 and it worked for me. In fact, I think it works better for low BMI patients. I didn't have a bingeing problem, I just ate too much most meals. Those extra 200-500 calories per meal added up. The band tells me when I've eaten enough which lowers my calorie consumption.

If your problem is bingeing on chocolate cake or pop or chips/dips, you can have problems with any of the WLS techniques.

First, don't compare yourself to me or anyone here. There is no normal. I lost 12 lbs the first 2 weeks. Mostly water/fluids loss. Then nothing for the next 3.5 months. Once my band was adjusted properly I lost 38 more lbs. Took me about 9 months to lose 50 lbs. I still have 25 to go and I'm working on it but my knees seem to have other ideas right now.

The day of my surgery I was 191. After surgery I went up to 194 (I was warned this would happen). I got banded on 05/08/14 and I weight 187.

I'm happy with the weightloss. I will be happy loosing 1-2 lbs per week knowing those pounds will never come back like before when I did all the fad diets out there.

How's it going? Did you get banded? I got banded in May at 191 and I'm down to 180 and I'm happy. I finally feel like a "normal" person when I eat. I eat whatever I want but in smaller portions and I don't feel deprived 1 bit.

Hi, my name is Lori. I am getting my band on Wednesday July 16, 2014. I am 5'7" and weigh 187. I seem to shock anyone that I have told and really don't care. My weight has gone up every year, I am 56 yrs. old and I am not interested in waiting until I have all of the associated health issues that accompany obesity. I am told that my ideal weight should be 135 to 155. I would feel very successful if I can maintain a weight of 155 to 160. This procedure is costing me $16,000.00...a darn good investment for a heather lifestyle.

I was banded jan 15, 2012, I weighed 198.8 when I went in to surgery. I now weight 138. I would love to lose another 10-15 lbs. and have maintained my weight loss but overall I am happy . I still have to remind myself to slow down, chew a lot and not snack .. I am only 5' tall so my bmi was in the obese range.

I got banded May 15, 2014 at 186.5. Now I am at 166 without yet being in the green zone. I still have hunger in between meals but it is because I am eating much smaller portions. I don't think being 190 has anything to do with how successful you will be. I was first banded years ago and started out at 190 and got down to 130 which I held onto for many years. So the band has worked for me in the past and is working again and i was the same weight as you starting off. I am exercising a little bit and being persistent about getting support. You will work it girl....good luck with your surgery!

I was 199 when I was banded on 5/20/14. I have since lost 26 pounds. It does come off slower but it is possible.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
