What are your thoughts regarding Bananas?

Recommended Posts

I am allergic to Latex. And banana's have latex in them and so I can't eat them because of reaction..( bad)..But I could eat them if I wanted too!

Bananas don't have latex in them, btw. :D. The Proteins in bananas and several other fruits are used to manufacture latex.

I am allergic to cantaloupe, walnuts, pecans, peaches, pears, and several other things when uncooked and very ripe because they contain a chemical that mimics hay fever. It suuuucks.

Oops I wrote it wrong.. Pardon me! This is the answer I was told... :) I can however eat bananas when cooked...Otherwise I get very sick!

Thanks @@LipstickLady I should have said it better....

Bananas and Latex Allergy

Like avocados and chestnuts, bananas and plantain contain substances called chitinases that are associated with the latex-fruit allergy syndrome. There is strong evidence of the cross-reaction between latex and these foods. If you have a latex allergy, you may very likely be allergic to these foods as well. Processing the fruit with ethylene gas increases these enzymes; organic produce not treated with gas will have fewer allergy-causing compounds. In addition, cooking the food may deactivate the enzymes.

Maybe 2/month only. When you have them, make them count!

I eat one small banana a day. I work out a lot so the potassium does me good. However, I can't eat more than that. They really fill me up. It has 90 calories and 23 grams of carbs.. but they are at least the good carbs.

If you are watching your other carbs it shouldn't be that bad. I don't eat the bananas anymore because they give me horrible reflux. I stick to the banana flavoring. If the banana smoothie works for you then go for it. This WLS and eating plan is not a one size fits all kind of program. If you find your weight loss has stalled then it could mean you are getting too many carbs and you will know to cut out the banana. This diet is a on the job learning process. Go for it.

Hey all! There is some great advice and information in this thread. Thank you all for your opinions. And I agree with a previous poster that I need to watch my language and not say things like "I CAN"T give up <fill in the blank>". That type of internal dialogue cannot continue if I want to be successful in this.

I had my nutrition class today and asked specifically about the banana issue. There are two dietitians on staff and this was the second one I've met. She told me that it is a manner of opinion. It is her belief that banana's contribute more good than bad. She said to watch my carb intake, no more than 35 grams, and add a half banana to any smoothie I'd like. She also said the other dietician didn't personally like or eat banana's and so simply advised everyone against them.

So, Yay!! My banana's can stay.

"No bananas do not contain latex. But around half of all people with latex allergy have allergic reactions when eating particular foods including avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwifruit, passionfruit, plum, strawberry and Tomato. This is because some of the Proteins in latex that cause latex allergy are also present in these fruits. Common symptoms include tingling in the mouth, stuffy nose, itchy eyes and wheezing..." from Yahoo Answers

One banana a day is actually good for you as it will help regulate your digestion and it contains pectin, a dietary Fiber which is metabolized into fat burning enzymes by good bacteria in the stomach and intestines. Do not have more than one a day because of the high Glycemic index and you might time it for first meal of the day or post workout meal. These two times are when the body can best process carbs optimally. Carbs are required for Protein synthesis to occur so you must eat them. They also regulate so many processes in the body, many of them neurological.

why i feel like a crazy person on low carbs: carbs help regulate hormone balance in the body and are required for good neurological functioning. carbs are not bad, how most americans eat them are.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
