what did you do the week of your surgery?

Recommended Posts

It's official...3 days to my sleeve! I'm wondering if I should be taking this time to do something. Any words of wisdom...things you wish you knew to do, say, ask the week of surgery?

Hmm... Get all your laundry done now, because you won't feel like it when you get back. Other than that, just relax and pamper yourself a bit. Dream about how great you'll feel buying tiny sizes and knowing that you're healthy.

Unfortunately no words of wisdom here. Pretty normal week for me....I worked everyday right up until the moment I left for the airport. I guess I did spend a lot of time confirming that my pet sitting arrangements were covered (I had one "friend" back out at the last minute). I was looking forward to a leisurely postop recovery "vacation" but my planned 2 weeks off turned into 1 week. Sure hope you can manage a more relaxing time for yourself. I guess the upside is I was too busy to fret or second guess my decision. And life back to normal as soon as I got home.

I second getting the laundry done.

  • Do as much housework as you can, actually. You're not going to want to do it right away post-op.
  • Make sure you have your Protein drinks/water, broth, herbal teas, Jello and popsicles handy.
  • If you can swing it, get a massage and/or mani-pedi, facial, have your hair done, etc…
  • Select the room you're going to be doing most of your resting in. Fill it with things that make you smile. Maybe flowers, candles, etc…
  • Make sure you have things to keep you entertained such as videos, books, puzzles, etc…

Good luck, and I wish you a speedy recovery!

Be well…

I'm also getting my surgery done on May 22. I have cleaned my house and did my laundry, did my shopping for my Clear liquids after surgery. Now I'm just dealing with my nerves.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
