New with TONS of Questions from Sacramento Ca.

Hello everyone!! I am 26 and live in Sacramento California. My doctor recently talked to me about considering Lap Band Surgery, at first i freaked out a little and though "isnt that a bit over the top?" :omg: When my Dr said to me "have u considered WLS" I though "OMG I know im overweight but there are people out there far worse then me". Then I realized I weigh 291 pounds I am 5' 8 and that is extremly overweight. I have tried many diets probably since i was in about 6th grade I have struggled with my weight. I am active and I go to the gym and take classes I just have a problem with telling myself when to stop i guess.:speechles

All the posts on here have really helped me understand this surgery. I know this isnt a magic surgery but I think combined with being active, working out, and really trying I can reach my goal! I know I am ready!

I havent seen anyone on here from Sacramento but if there is can you PLEASE let me know some more information. ie: good dr's, support groups, insurance information. etc btw I have Blue Shield PPO 750 plan. My dr. said usually its fairly easy to get wls approved through them. :biggrin1: Anyone have experience in Ca with this?

So if anyone has any more information please let me know!! I am so new to all of this I dont even know where to begin. (this board was a good start though!) Thank you for all being so open about this change in your life, it really helps people like me!!!! :)

Hi, I live in San Jose, CA. If you can't find a surgeon, Dr. McKeen in San Jose is wonderful. He is available 24x7 for his patients just by calling his cell phone. He did my surgery 10 months ago. My stats are similar to yours. I had a BMI of 40 at 282 5'8. My goal is 175-80. You will probably lose faster than I have because it sounds like you exercise a lot. Good luck to you. Julie

I am 53 years old and 5"6. I have had on and off weight problems and with menopause weighed 239, up 10# from last year. I had the lap band procedure just 5 days ago. I have had it rough. The physician doesn't evidently specialize in this and I have had nausea, regurgitation, and some dumping syndrome. I have had ice chips, crystal light, Protein Shake (4 oz at a time). Everything in minimal amounts. What am I doing wrong?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
