Recommended Posts

Just need a lot of help and motivation....I am one week POST OPT TODAY....Still very tired, stomach cramps at food but still nibbling on Protein hoping for energy. I think my mindset is still not right going from a band to a sleeve but however I have to be successful....Is it ok to start exercising???

Begin walking. It will help with cramps (which is probably gas). Check with your dr., but mine allowed me to walk/ride stationery bike for the first 3 weeks then I was clear to do any exercise I was comfortable with.

I was told to start walking before I left the hospital! Have to walk a total of 30 mins per day. It is becoming easier and easier.

I was also told to right away work up to 30 minutes and then go beyond that as you feel better. By 1 week I was walking 1.5 miles a day and I'm now 2 weeks post op and walk 2.5 miles a day or do 45 min on elliptical. Also exercise physiologist said I could do seated arm weight lifting with light weights.

I am 1 week post op today as well and feel pretty good. I had to walk when I was in the hospital and every day after. The rumbles were gas, but trust me walking has been my lifesaver. I am up to 20 minutes of walking twice per day.

I started walking on day 2 and have not stopped since - well unless I got a partial tear of my ACL last October. That one definitely slowed me down. I am now back to running/playing soccer/tkd. The important part is to listen to your body. If it hurts - back off and don't do as much. I would have pain on day - back off on how fast I was walking. The next day, I was fine. My biggest advise is to listen to your body.

I was told I could start doing Cardio about 3 weeks post-op and I could start lifting weights 6 weeks post-op. I've been hitting the gym very hard since then.

Good Luck!!!!

I'm not allowed to exercise until I'm 6 weeks post-op. However, you should walk... A LOT. Walk as much as possible. (Also helps with gas!) My surgeon said walk for a half hour. If you can't, walk for 10 minutes at a time. I am allowed to swim 2 weeks post-op too. Good luck!

I haven't been released to go back to Water aerobics yet...Doc said 4 weeks after surgery. I am walking about 2 miles a day now...not all at once but I am getting there. It is getting too hot to walk in Mississippi so I may use the elliptical at the gym soon. I am going to start weight as soon as Doc says it is okay.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
