Insurance to pay for protein shakes

Recommended Posts

Hello, was wondering did your insurance carrier pay for Protein Shakes? I heard of a site name insurenutrition.com and they accept insurance. Some say it's a scam and some say it not a scam.

I was wondering about this too, logically Protein supplements and all supplements should at least be covered post op because they are needed medically....but when it comes to Insurance....and recent health care changes....what does logic have to do with it/

I tried it. They sent info to my dr. and wrote back and said he denied it. I never talked to my dr. about it. I don't normally drink their shakes, but hey, if they were covered why not?

That is my copayment. My insurance covers it for 7 months and they will fax a prescription to the doctor and he or she has to sign it and fax it back. Then they send it to the insurance company. It covers supplements Multivitamin and cream for your scares and they say it works on your tiger strips. ☺

When applying, do you give the name of your pcp doctor or the doctor that performed the surgery?

I did the online form and when I was at the doc's yesterday he saw the request for an rx in my file from them and he asked me what it was. I told him it was a way to get insurance to cover some shakes and he said "oh" and closed my file. So, I'm guessing he never sent them anything signed.

Oh well -- looked at the site and it only covered a few of their shakes -- I'll just buy my own.

If you search on the site for "insurance paying for Protein drinks" there is a really extensive post on this

A lot of folks have been getting it covered through their pharmacy benefit

It really all depends on your employer benefit so even same insurance different employers will be different

It is not a scam, at least from this company. I get five cases of shakes a month plus Vitamin supplements. I have no co-pay. The company verifies if your insurance covers it and then sends a prescription fax to your doctor's office. I got my first shipment in about 2 weeks after applying, and they come every month.

it would be very nice to offset some costs of this journey to receive some needed Protein shakes at a reduced or free rate!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
