I am a 41yo single mom of twins and am considering WLS in August. I am very committed to this journey, but find myself anxious about some of the "issues" surrounding being a single parent going through this. Has anyone else done this? Was it hard to stick to the liquid/restricted diets when you had to cook meals for the kids? Any suggestions for making that easier? How about your post-op ability to manage parenting for the first couple weeks? Appreciate any advice!

How old are your twins? I'm preop and I'm a single mom, too. My boys are 14 and 20 and eat anything and everything in sight. I let my older son grocery shop so he has the things in the house they like to eat and I don't hear "There's nothing to eat!!!"

If you're a member of a church, you might ask if they could have people bring over evening meals for the first week out of surgery. That would keep you from having that chore yourself.

Are you more worried about cooking -- that you won't feel like cooking or that you'll be too tempted to eat it yourself? Are there things the twins like that you don't really care for? So you could cook those meals early on.

Best wishes as you make plans.

I am a single mom of a 12 year old boy and 2 year old girl. I am 9 weeks post op, I was extremely nervous about my daughter as she is very attached to me. Things went much better than I anticipated and I avoided any major catastrophes following surgery. Lol, I will say that it is sometimes difficult making their dinner and trying not to steal a bite here and there. Especially when I'm making them pizza. But the fact is I have to create new healthy food habits and this is just part of the journey. Good Luck to you!! I'm sure you will do great! :)

Thanks Ginger and Casey! My twins are 3, and a handful and a half ;). I imagine its tough for all moms, but I'm worried about getting it all done. Looking at surgery in August, but still have some hoops to jump.

how hard was the post op period with children? im single mother to a 4 year old. shes pretty easy to get along with but I dont have much of a support system with people to watch her. Im hoping to get something worked out while im in the hosp? how is it pain wise with children at home right after surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
