Type II Diabetes, lap band to RNY conversion surgery

Recommended Posts

I am five years out from lap band surgery. I lost 50 lbs, primarily before my procedure and then came to a dead stop with weight loss. I have not put any of the weight back on but have not been able to lose. My diabetes did not improve with the 50 lb weight loss and I am now looking to convert to RNY because of the amazing statistics for remission of diabetes. Has anyone done this and if so, how are you doing?

I am also in the process of doing this. I'm almost 4.5 years out with my band. I only lost about 25 lbs but have gained it back! I have type 2 diabetes and pcos. My current surgeon told me that the band is NOT for people with 100 lbs to lose and it is NOT for someone with diabetes. He also said they are taking out more bands than they are putting in. (I'm going to the naval hospital in Portsmouth, VA; its huge so i'd imagine that they see a lot of these!)

I have seen quite a few people able to lose 100 lbs but they were already very verrrry overweight. I don't know how many were diabetic. I do know that I'm pissed! I needed to lose this weight 5 years ago, so I'm beyond ready for june 12 to be here. My doctor says my surgery will take about an hour and a half, but has allotted 3 hours for it in case of any band complications.

Keep us informed on how things go for you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
