Pre-op diet - pantry necessities

Recommended Posts

I start my prep diet Wednesday, and I'm actually going to spend some time this evening cleaning out my pantry and fridge. I plan on getting rid of everything in the pantry except canned veggies and some fruits, Soups, cooking essentials, sf Jello, and crystal light. I am also basically going to clean my fridge and freezer out of everything except lean Proteins and I Can't Believe Its Not Butter spray. I'm going to costco first thing in the morning to stock up on Premier Protein shakes and frozen chicken. I also need to get sf popsicles and broths, but I plan on getting those from the grocery store because I don't need giant costco sized packages. I also just ordered some powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder for post op.

I live alone, so I don't have to worry about keeping stuff around for family, so I think it will make it easier for me to avoid temptation.

Throw out anything made in a factory and head for the perimeters of the grocery store, where you will find veggies, fruit, meat, fish, eggs, real butte,r and cheeses (not processed cheese foods). Your new tummy will appreciate actual nourishment from what you eat. Now, I must conceed that if you live in a food desert or must store stuff back for heavy winter weather, then frozen and canned is better than negelecting to eat.

You just need to be creative and developed a routine that will work for you. For the first few days post-op I had baby food as an emergency standby. My boyfriend does all the cooking around here. He loves to cook Mediterranean style, since he is from Malta. so I stepped down from that responsibility and help with clean-up. Anyway on his days off, he batch cooks for me and puts portions in the freezer for me.

So...fresh is better than frozen...frozen is better than canned goods, and canned goods are better than junk.

Are you asking what to get for the pre-op diet? Or post-op? Or both?

I would also love to see a list of stuff for all stages.

pre-op diet - advice as to how to ready my pantry?

@@wittygirl

i also did the basic stuff about ridding the pantry/fridge/freezer of most/all "bad" foods

suggestion - do not put frozen yummy SF popsicles in pantry!!!

but...................i also decided to paint my walk in pantry a pretty sky blue :)

makes it look nicer getting my food

now i enjoy walking into my pantry - picking out my food

its always been very important for me to set a "pretty" plate :)

putting on a nice small plate

always use complimentary colors to eat

ie fish (white) with example green Beans, spinich et al

fish and cauliflower - people have been shot for less :o :D

good luck with pre-op :) and surgery of course

Y'all these are really great ideas. Thank you. I don't know what to expect of the pre-op diet, but think I have a better sense post op. Everyone does it different, so I thought I'd ask. Looks like the food Bank or the school will be getting a pantry full of stuff. I think I'm in the right headspace, but would like to come home from the hospital ready for 4 weeks of liquid and soft food. Baby food is a great idea....any particular types over another?

I love the suggestions so far. I would add, do not over-buy. I am still doing this. A single Healthy Choice Soup is 3-4 or more servings for me post-op. I have more than a months supply in my pantry now. If you buy perishables, watch the expiration date. I threw out a bunch of yogurts for that reason as they expired before I could eat them. I have a bunch of Protein shakes that I will probably not use, as I've moved on and some I just can't stand anymore.

As to baby food, applesauce with no sugar added was a friend of mine. I liked the ones with additional fruits, but watch for no added sugar. My blender was a better friend than buying a baby food alternative.

Follow your Drs lists. Each Dr will have a slightly different program and progression.

Be sure to let us know how this goes for you!!!

I don't really see how anyone can eat baby food lol. There are so many other options. I recommend don't overbuy for that pantry. Your tastes will definitely change. I cleaned out my pantry and donated a trunkload to a single mom with 2 kids.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
