How soon does the soreness go away?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! This forum is great! I have learned far more than just with my dr alone. He's not the most forthcoming individual. :phanvan

I was just banded Thursday, April 12 and am still pretty sore. I had a friend who was banded on a Thursday and was back at work Saturday. She just thinks I'm a bigger baby than she was. :notagree

My question is: How soon does the soreness go away?

I was at day 5-6 before I started to really feel like I could work again (desk job). I went back after 7 days off (from Wed-Fri) and those three days were HARD for me! Not so much the pain, but gassy and upset tummy feeling. Very tired at the end of the work day. I wish I had taken 10 days off for my surgery.

It took me almost a week before I felt like a human. But please remember this throughout your journey in bandland---everyone is different: Recovery times are different, what you will be able to eat/not eat and how fast or slow you lose weight.

Congrats on getting banded!

Denise :clap2:

friday marked two weeks for me, and I dug a pond in the back yard, it took about 8 days for me to not guard the wound.

I went back Monday (banded on Thurs) but was still quite sore and moving slowly. You will probably be sore for a good week. Not unbearably so, but sore. I compared it to other abdominal surgeries I've had (c-section, open gall bladder surgery) and it was a piece of cake. Your friend is probably minimizing her pain.

Speaking of liquid hydrocodone... I have to take numerous medications due to my injuries from the car wreck. You can't take pills any longer after lap-band? Not sure all my meds would come in liquid form. Does anyone know? Thanks.... and that's another question on my list for Dr. Fisher!

You are correct, not all meds can be broken or crushed. What meds are you on and I can tell you if they can be crushed/broken.

Loritab, Neurontin, Effexor are the main ones. There are others I take occassionaly. Oh, I'm on B12 & Calcium as well. Bones still aren't healing at 23 months.... hope weight loss helps that! Thanks.

Lortab comes in liquid, Neurontin... not so sure it comes in liquid form but you can break open the capsules. B12 is small enough that it shouldn't be a problem but it can be crushed, Calcium comes in liquid.

So, I'm assuming then that you can't take pill form after lap-band?

Right after surgery you likely have a lot of swelling and the tablets/capsules might not go down. After restriction they might not go down then either.

Each person is different.

I have not experienced this at all (below). Even in the hospital, they gave me a painkiller by mouth at several points, in addition to my blood pressure pill. That said, I ditched the giant prenatal Vitamins post-op, in favor of Flintstone chewables. Small pills are OK for me; I'm not taking a chance with the horse pills though.

So, I'm assuming then that you can't take pill form after lap-band?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
