So I am 3 weeks post op and I have tried several different Protein powders and drinks already. I have a generic vanilla kind that I get from our local grocery store which is somewhat good. I use PB2 to mask the taste of the protein taste and that works well. I've tried Core Power Strawberries and Cream...uck! It tastes like medicine to me. I've tried a chocolate from MTS Nutrition, it was good but I don't want to spend that kind of money on it - a friend gave me some scoops to try it. I've tried Cookies and cream from Muscle Milk and it's ok but I couldn't see myself drinking it daily. The other day I bought Core Power Chocolate and fell in LOVE with it! It was like thick and rich chocolate milk. Absolutely delicious. Problem is it has 26 grams of sugar! My stomach hurt after I drank it. So I can't use it anymore :(

So....what are some of your favorites that taste good and you can take daily with no problems?

Ok my favorites (I'm about 5 weeks out)

Fuzzy Navel (Syntrex) with some Crystal LIght drops, made with water--This is my go to every morning as a mid morning snack

Amplify smoothie in Creamy chocolate (found at GNC) mixed with high Protein milk and a little PB2 and banana

1/2 Amplify 1/2 Syntrex Matrix Mint Cookie mixed with high Protein milk (like a mint chocolate milkshake!)

1/2 Amplify 1/2 Click Decaf Mocha mixed with high protein milk (like a frapaccino!)

I've tried a bunch of others and found them totally gross. I ordered a boat load of samples from Nashuanutrition.com/store/ which I highly recommend. They come very quickly.

My favorite brands/flavors are Unjury chocolate Splendor, Chike Iced coffee, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Vanilla Ice Cream, Jay Robb whey (any flavor), Syntrax Matrix (any flavor), and Syntrax Nectar Sweets (chocolate truffle, vanilla bean, cappuccino). I generally mix with CarbMaster milk from Kroger.

Honestly I don't care for any of the premade shakes, I think they all taste like runoff from an industrial agricultural supply plant.

I do a lot of mix ins to my shakes, mostly instant coffee, Torani sugar free syrups, flavors/extracts and flavored Sweet Leaf drops, but also some things like lemon or lime juice, flavored yogurt, PB2, sugar free pudding mix -- anything to give it more flavor and me more variety.

  • Where did you find Syntrex? Is that sold at GNC or some place like that?

Thank you for the response! I have tried Unjury and I like the unflavored and the chicken flavor. Those would probably be my favorite!

I get the Syntrax Nectar and Syntrax Matrix powders from Nashua Nutrition. They sell samples so you can try before you commit to a large amount:

You can also find it on Amazon, mybariatricpantry.com and similar sites. I don't know about physical stores like GNC or Vitamin Shoppe -- I guess call your local store and ask if they carry it? I know Vitamin Shoppe sells it online but I am not sure about in the brick and mortar stores.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
