Slow weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I have only 2.5 lbs a week since surgery (even the first week). I have read the average is 5-15. I know that is still good to lose 2.5 but I'm confused because it's not as much as I thought. Let me also say this is only week 2. Did anyone have slow weight loss at the beginning?

Think of it this way...you are losing weight and you will continue to lose weight instead of losing no weight. The question is are you meeting your Protein intake? Are you eating what your surgeon as planned for you? Are you taking your Vitamins? Since my 10 day preop diet and having my surgery on march 31, which in total is almost 7.5 weeks, I have lost 34 pounds which is about 3-4 pounds a week on an average. I don't fret about it but make sure I stick to my diet. Also keep in mind everyone loses weight differently. So hang in there...you will get to your goal. Best of luck!

meledl,

Do NOT be discouraged at all!!! I only lost a few pounds right after surgery too; but, I kept losing steadily (sometimes 1 lb/wk, sometimes 4 lb/wk, sometimes no change!) but, overall...I have lost 75 pounds and am at my (1st) goal weight, at a year-and-a-half out! I think I have less sagging skin and other signs of "dramatic" weight loss than many people I have seen.

Make sure to get Protein, Vitamins, Water. Follow doctor's orders - which they usually don't care if you lose for 3-6 months while you're healing....the weight will come off. Slow and steady wins the race!!!! LOL

You will never have an average weight loss every week. Like said above, it may be 1 lb, 3 lbs, or none. I remember in the beginning that I had a stall for almost 3 weeks. I wasnt getting enough calories and I think my body thought I was in starvation mode. The important thing is get your Protein in, Water and follow Drs instructions. It will come off. Sometimes you are losing inches instead of weight. Take your measurements to follow that too. Enjoy the ride. I am starting to run out of clothes. Lol

I am also slow on the weight loss.. but I've noticed that I am losing inches. Don't get on the scale everyday. . The weight will come off. Best of luck

I totally agree with the comment about the scale. Once a week is often enough. You don't want to get discouraged for no reason at all. Inches are great.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue at 7 weeks out. You're only 2 weeks out which means you're probably still retaining IV fluids & air from surgery. The 1st month I lost 13.5 lbs. So far the last month I've only lost 3 lbs. I know that it will happen for me eventually & it will for you. Try only weighing once a month to keep from driving yourself crazy. Just like someone said earlier, slow and steady wins the race.

I am 4 months out and lost slowly since the start. But it's still coming off. Slowly but surely. That's what is important. It took me years to get the size I was so I'm okay with it being slow.

It's been very slow for me even though I can't eat but 2 to 4oz every 6 hours or I will throw-up. I wonder if my pouch will ever heal? I'm so tried of throwing up.

I agree with all the other folks that are a bit further out....don't worry about the weight loss...it WILL happen, I promise!! I am about 18 months out now and I really didn't have that much loss at any one time...but it slowly does come off. 1) eat/drink what your surgeon says 2) try VERY HARD not to eat anything too soon...and try very hard to NOT throw up...it is very hard on your surgical site and it can stretch your pouch to a size you won't want later on. 3) Don't weigh yourself more than 1-2 X per week (at most)...you will make yourself crazy. 4) Don't get consumed with weight loss, food or the scale...just go about your life and you will be down a few sizes in no time. Let your body heal then let the surgery do it's job...it will...all you have to do it follow instructions.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
