<2 weeks out and having problems with anything other than water

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on May 5th, so I'm a little over a week and some change out. So far, everything has been great.. with one exception, of course. I know I'm supposed to be getting my Protein in and drinking a ton of Water.. problem is, just the thought of my Protein shakes makes my stomach churn. I have a hard time with popsicles and jell-o too, to the point where.. since my surgery, I have had exactly 1 Protein shake, 3 popsicles, 2 jell-o cups, and I tried a few bites of yogurt but my stomach said NO! I haven't even been getting in as much Water as I should.. and my surgeon said wait before I start taking my Multivitamins and Calcium until 2 weeks out, so I haven't even been doing that. I've lost 15 pounds since my surgery date, but I'm worried that because my diet is so extremely lacking in protein and basically everything else that what I've lost has been muscle. Has anybody else had this problem? Have I just totally screwed myself with muscle loss instead of fat loss? I guess I just need to woman up and drink the Protein Shakes anyway, but holy crap.. do not want!

Face it protien shakes suck for most of us. As you say, girl up a take your medicine. I wish they made shakes that were not sweet. I have tried a Bariatric Advantage protien Soup that actually was palitable. It tasted like a cross between miso and split pea. Take a look at their products.

I am 3.5 weeks out. I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble. 10 days out you should be on full liquids and almost getting ready to move on to pureed foods. I think you should give your surgeon's office a call and let them know that you are not able to stomach anything but Water at this point. Best of luck to you!

I feel your pain. I am just over two weeks out. I can't stand Protein shakes or chewable multivitamins. To the point they gag me.

I can eat soft foods now but I'm having a hard time with getting enough Protein I. That way.

I'm gonna try to find some unflavored protein. Hopefully I can find something without a weird texture

Hi, I just wanted to tell you that the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth mix has a lot of protein (20 g) and tastes pretty savory. Maybe that warm, savory broth would agree with you more? You can buy the sample packets online for $2 each, if you're interested. You also might be able to find it in some nutrition/vitamin stores. I hope this will pass for you...stay strong and remember you're not alone on this journey. {{{HUGS}}}

I struggled early on with the Protein shakes. I found one I loved pre-op and bought the 10 pound bag of it. Post-op, it was so sweet, I couldn't handle it. Made me gag. Gave it away on Craigslist. I started the search, inquiring here and at my local Vitamin Shop. They gave me a few samples and I purchased a few, but didn't like any of them. I finally stumbled across Premier Protein shakes at costco. That was almost 3 years ago and I still buy them today. If you search the site for Premier Protein, you will find many, many threads. I think they are a good one for me. The bottom line is I probably spent about $100 and a solid week diligently trying to find the Protein that worked for me. You may have to do the same.

Muscle loss is real with WLS as the body will metabolize muscle just as soon as it will metabolize fat. As we know, a gram of fat has 9 calories as does a gram of muscle. When the body needs 9 calories of energy, it is not going to say, "Well, my host would like to lose fat, so I shall metabolize that first." Nope. So, we need a supply of protein in our body to rebuild muscle which was lost and to have it readily available should that be the metabolize dujour.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
