Holy Cow! Wasn't expecting this!

Allow myself... to introduce myself :)

I've been a long time participant in the Sleeve forums. My surgery is scheduled for Monday, 19-May. Today I had my final pre-op appointment, and while the doc was reviewing my chart, he saw something he hadn't caught before. Polyps from my EGD, coupled with GERD, he started thinking bypass. A call to the other doc who did my EGD, and it was set. Just like that.

So I've been studying and researching sleeve since I started this, and while I was somewhat familiar with RNY, I never put any time into it. Now I'm in crash-course mode!!!

Any tips would be appreciated!

Best,

John

Hi John

I too was all set to do the sleeve and three weeks before surgery my surgery had to be switched to bypass because of GERDS.

I knew very little about gastric bypass and had to take a crash course about it and in the long run it worked out great for me.

I am pleased with my gastric bypass. I have had very little problems with it.

I hope that everything works out for you.

Best of luck with your upcoming surgery.

Same story here. Wanted the sleeve but turned out I have reflux, so my doctor said forget about the sleeve, you are getting the bypass :P I am now happy I went with the bypass but I was heartbroken than. But it all went smooth and I am surprised that I can eat a lot so I am actually glad for the malabsorption...

By the way my surgeon said that people so overweight like me (us) will have reflux, and if endoscopy do not show reflux then the endoscopy was not carried out properly. Now I dunno if he is right or wrong but this is what he told me...

I had the RNY while a few of my friends had the sleeve. Honestly our lives are very similar. In the long term the sleeve patients can eat a little more quantity. (I mean a little). We've compared everything as we go through stages. Our insides are different but our lifestyle changes have been the same. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
