melissapishappy32 2 Posted May 15, 2014 Have finished my 6 months of classes and now I am waiting on my approval from insurance. I know I have to have an upper GI after I get my approval, I already know I have a Hiatal hernia, will they still do my surgery? I didn't know I had a hernia. I fact a year ago I started having problems that lined up to a hiatal hernia and my doctors didn't believe me. Well I had surgery Monday and while they were in there they found a hiatal hernia that they repaired right there. Check with your doctor they might be able to take care of it all at once
Tgarden 76 Posted May 15, 2014 Hi there! Yes, your doc should be able to take care of it during your bypass procedure. When I had lap band put in several years ago I had a hiatal hernia repaired during that surgery, and I had another one repaired this time during bypass. makes healing take a little longer, but you'll be no worse for the wear! SnowDaisy 73 Posted May 15, 2014 Yes you will still get your surgery. I had four hernias repaired and my surgeon also took out a rotten gall bladder while he was In there. I feel like I got a full service...lol Xx
mitzie46 116 Posted May 15, 2014 My understanding is they repair those while they are doing the surgery if they need to.
Ginger Snaps 1,323 Posted May 19, 2014 My doctor will repair mine during my surgery -- he said it only adds about 15 minutes of surgery time. I'm really looking forward to that because there are times it hurts like HECK... like when I bend over. I feel like I have to do a backbend to get the kink out again. Best wishes on your surgery. 1 Drummergirl505 reacted to this
Drummergirl505 7 Posted May 20, 2014 I have a hiatel hernia also and my surgeon plans to fix it during my surgery. I am glad because it will help me feel better. I hope it all goes well with you and your surgery.
Dawnakers 40 Posted May 24, 2014 I too have a hiatal hernia. I was unaware that I had one until after the upper GI. My doctor said he would fix it during my surgery.
WildGrits 101 Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) Not all Hiatal Hernias need fixing. Some are small enough to be left and as the weight is lost, they slip back to their rightful spot. If it is worth being fixed, I believe it is common practice to fix them during the surgery. I have an inguinal hernia and my sergeon is gonna fix it when he does my Tummy Tuck next year.
