Here we go again....constipation

Recommended Posts

It's Day 4 and I haven't gone. I'm on the last day of the full liquid diet. I start mushy food tomorrow. Surgery was May 5th. I don't even feel the urge to go which is worrying me. Any recommendations? By the way, everyday I have two teaspoons of Benefiber in my Protein Shake and a tablespoon of Miralax in my tea. Still nothing. Help!!! I've been constipated before but at least I had the urge to go....this time, no urge.

Other than what you are already doing I have no idea. Do you have any discomfort? The Miralax can take a couple of days but it does work. Good luck to you!! Been there myself

I tried a natural vegetable based laxative the night before, gas x and some walking. V8 splash too helped me go. I had surgery May 8 and just pooped this morning so it takes awhile :)

I was quite plugged up following surgery. It took almost a week to finally get action. Whether it was the late effects of anesthesia or other meds, or the lost of normal peristaltic movement from food intake, I finally gave birth....No details provided in consideration of the sensibilities of the Gentle Readers here....suffice it to say I've never had such an experience before.

The last few days before I was truly ready to head to ER, was a few oz. of straight prune juice several times per day. FInally I got an 8oz glass down, & magic happened.

Ample fluids helped the process, but in the postOp no Fiber intake period, I was becoming concerned.

Don't hesitate to call your Doc if necessary. I don't think postOp Constipation is unusual.

So needless to say I finally went potty this morning after 6 days of nothing. Then went again.. And again.. And again!! Think the laxative was too much. Can vouch that it works, though!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
