Started Pre-Op Need Help

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

I was not suppose to start my pre-op till the 20th(surgery 5/27). I decided to start a week early to try and get the hang of things and see how my blood sugars will react. This is only day one on a full liquid pre-op diet. I was able to get in 97g of Protein however, I was unable to meet the calorie requirement of 1000-1300. Are we suppose to be watching the carb count of 30g a day also? I will check with my surgery nurse also. Carb count was well over 30 for the day(51) and at bedtime still had 245 calories to eat. Any suggestions on how to get the calorie amount up to at least 1000? Thanking you all in advance.

Rose

Hello there!

I find myself not getting 1000 calories a day. My nutritionist has me weighing out my food with 3 oz of Protein and 1 oz each of grain and veggies or fruit. I average 825 with 70 grams of Protein unless I do a training session where I add beneprotein to my meal at night to help heal then I hit 80+. For my pre-op diet I struggled but I started to weigh it all out and get an idea of how much food I was going to get. I didn't starve myself but I was hungry. It is amazing to me such a small amount of food fills me up now. I know every doctor has their own plan so if you follow yours you should be fine. The carbs are very low when you are only doing 3 oz of grains a day. :)

I had no pre-op diet.

We don't know what your pre-op diet looks like? Each doctor has their own protocol and each may change it up for every patients. You're an individual and your doctor or nutritionist may design a plan just for you. Some docs do Atkins, Some do South Beach or some do liquids only? You should check with your doctor and get more specific plans :(

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I spoke w/my surgery nurse today and she told me not to focus on calorie intake. She said my main goal now is to try and hit the 80-100g of Protein. In regards to the carbs on the pre-op there is no set amount such as 30g but she said keep them as low as possible. So yesterday I got in 90 Protein and today I barely got my 80.

Hi Rose, glad you got to touch base with your medical professionals. Good luck with pre-op -- I was so happy to lose weight that for once I knew was never coming back!

The pre-op so far is not bad. Day 3 and already down 4lbs. I had a craving for salad last night but I called my sister in-law who will be banded 5 days before me and she helped bring me off the ledge....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
