My surgery was April 9, 2014, and I am entering my week 6 food progression. My husband and I will be driving to Florida this weekend, and I'm having difficulty coming up with ideas of portable Protein foods that don't require refrigeration or heating. So far I've come up with Protein Bars, and that's about it. Any suggestions?

My latest allowed additions to my diet. Still no fresh veggies or fruit.

you can probably have cheese...I always have an insulated bag for my "stuff"... I fill a Water bottle 3/4 of the way and freeze it so it works as the cooler/ice bag and then I can drink it :) ... Protein powder can be added to anything...so that's always good...

you may want to check with your dr for road trip items that are allowable, as each dr is different...

good luck and have fun!

Can you take a or a small insulated lunch bag or box? If so I suggest cottage cheese cups, Greek Yogurt, cheese stix, tuna packets (they don't require refrigertation they can be purchased ready made), turkey deli meat.

If you don't have access to a cooler or insulated box then most of the items above are sold at many gas stations etc. so when you need to make a stop you can just grab something.

Good luck and have a fun trip!

Check with your doctor first, but I suggest cans of tuna fish, sardines, chicken, baked Beans, refried beans… nuts, beef/chicken Jerky, extra Protein powder. Have a safe and lovely trip!

Be well…

Peanut Butter might be an option. Ask your doctor to be sure.

Be safe and enjoy!

You can carry a small 6-pack cooler with cheese sticks and yogurt and freeze a couple of Water bottles before you travel. As far as non-perishable items, you can carry almonds, small tuna pouches, bananas and peanut/almond butter.

There's always the option of stopping at a convenience store along the way.

Happy travels! :)

Not sure if you have a Walmart by you. If you do they have Protein Shots. 45g of Protein per bottle. Its located by the Protein Shakes.< /p>

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I was trying to avoid a cooler, but I'm thinking I'm just going to have to suck it up and take one. Feeling a lot better about hitting the highway!

Now about being the only sober one with all my drunken friends.... Doc was very specific about no alcohol until 3 months. Should be interesting.

There are a

Lot of things you can buy on the way if you make quick stops at a grocery store, Walmart, or Target. Things like Greek yogurt, cheese, Mexican food, Soups, and Wendy's chili. You can do it - you know what you can tolerate by now!

I had my RNY surgery on April 8th and just took a road trip to Florida this past weekend. I packed a small cooler with Premier Protein shakes, Water and cheese sticks. I also brought bananas. We only stopped once to go to the restroom. My boyfriend even just ate cheese sticks and bananas with me. I would have my few bites and he would have a whole and then finish mine! It worked well! Also I went to FL for a wedding. My surgeon said it was ok to have small amounts of alcohol to Celebrate the toasts etc. Everyone around me drank. I had small sips of drinks but really I had no desire to drink much. Because I can get such small amounts of liquid in I was more thirsty for water in the Florida heat than anything else.

Have a great trip and try not to think too much about it. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
