PRE OP DIET HELP OR IDEAS..PLEASE

Recommended Posts

Starting my pre op diet tomorrow and my instructions are very unclear as far as what it says I can have. It only says 3 shakes a day and 3 oz of lean meat and 1 cup of vegetables. No other options like coffee or splenda or tea or bouillons or Popsicles or G2 Gatorade or anything like that. Just curious if anyone out there has other options on theirs. Gonna call my surgeons office today but just want some ideas if anyone had any to get threw the next 2 weeks.

if you are unclear, please call your doctor and get the correct information.

ask them for (examples of what to have or not have)....we all can offer our suggestions

but it may not be what your doctor recommends..please call them as you stated you would. BEST of luck.

PS: to get through it is easy, you just do it...you chose this surgery, so do what you have to to make it happen..

follow your doctors advice....the first 4 or 5 days, expect a head ache (due to detoxing your body) and if you are on liquids only, liquids in means liquids out (ask your doctor if you can take immodium AD) and STAY busy, drink ALOT and remember, its not easy but it is doable and it is worth it...you are the only one that can do this....so do it

Pre- and post-op regimes vary so greatly and of course all our bodies are different. I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners -- Splenda (aka sucralose), etc. so I needed a shake to accommodate that plus I wanted to do liver cleansing. Had to run all that by the nutritionist as they have every one on a shake they give out to all patients. I wasn't going to take that and my surgeon okayed the plan, saying "I wouldn't out that in my body either." I was liquids-only for two weeks. First few days hardest then it gets easier. This was the first time I dropped weight that I knew was NEVER coming back! Of course the excitement and nerves are mounting as the big day approaches, so try to stay as low stress as possible. Don't put yourself in harm's way, like thinking you can go to a birthday party or suddenly decide to throw a brunch event or something. Be gentle. I was really happy I upped my exercise during this time. It gave me something to step into right after surgery. The walking really helps kick the body into healing mode. Gave my body the message that things were different -- new chapter of health. Good luck with all! Glad you're talking to your surgeon's office. Make them clarify, clarify and write it all down. They are there for you and no question is too silly.

CarolinaGirl is absolutely correct. If you have any questions or unclear about your doctors instructions, you should be contacting them directly. Not just about this pre-op phase, but for EVERYTHING. You should never be unclear about your doctor's direction and if you are, ask them.

This sounds very similar to the lean and green I was on for 2 weeks pre-op.

There really shouldn't be any confusion. It is exactly as you state. Here was my day:

Wake up, get ready for work with a Protein shake

Drank Water in large amounts all morning

For lunch, a Protein Shake

Afternoon was a Water drinking bonanza

For dinner, it was a salad with veggies and (choose 1) chicken, shrimp, ground turkey (taco salad)

About 8:00, I would have another shake

Rinse, repeat ... day after day ... after day.

Sure, it got old, but I had a greater good in mind and knew I was getting my body ready for this life altering procedure. You can do it, too. I'm not going to lie and say it wasn't difficult at first. I did have a piece of my daughter's birthday cake on the second day, but that actually helped me to focus even harder. About the 5th day, I hit my stride and was fine. Don't overcomplicate things. It really is as simple as what I stated above.

Thanks Bandista...I appreciate all your words of wisdom..My Surgeons office just gave me a piece of paper that said Pre Op on it but wasn't very clear about what you could have or couldn't have..kind of a grey area..I've been very vigilant on what they have told me and educated myself very well the last 6 Months about what's ahead..I do work in a Dr's office and get plenty of support from them all..I did call my surgeons office today to clarify what their instructions were..I was just also interested in seeing how other people got threw the pre op diet...My biggest worry is having "liquid out" at work..That's a tough one..I definitely know the benefits from the diet and that It's well worth it..I'm going into this journey pretty educated as what's to come..thanks again for your kind words..

This was the same as mine, except I only could have 2 shakes. I switched up the lean Proteins at night, but didn't stray much from the plan because I wanted to make sure I shrunk my liver. It's only 2 weeks and it helps you prepare for the liquid diet after surgery. You can do this.

Yes, most pre-op liquid diets are two weeks to shrink your liver for the lapriscopic. Surgery.

But each doctor is different, and it could vary... but the majority is 2 weeks

I start my pre op liver shrinking diet Monday and surgery is July 7 th. 3 Protein Shakes a day sugar free Jello or pudding, brith, sugar free Popsicles, and low carb yogurt. That's it well except sugar free crystal lite in Water. This makes the second time doing this for me. I was admitted to the hospital 2 days before my surgery date of June 9 th with Diverticulitis. Praying this time I get my surgery complete without problems.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
