Looking for a mentor from Missouri or even better from Shawnee Mission Health at Prairie Star. My doctor is Dr. Hoehn. I am just starting my nutrition classes and required 6 month supervised diet. Any comments, advice, experiences welcome. Thanks.

Did you do your psych eval with Dr. Sabapathy? If so what can I expect, I don't have to do the nutritional visits my insurance waived them I just have to do the psych eval and preop class. What was the pre op class about? Thanks for your response and any input you might have. What was the last few weeks since surgery like were you in a lot of pain? Sorry for all the questions, lol, just would like as much info as I can get. Thanks again

I am so glad to help. Dr. S. was was. I was a self pay so my experience might be a little different. I had to answer about 30 questions on a form. They were easy but be honest on them. I think he is looking for watch outs on those that are not honestly confronting food and eating issues. He asked about my family life and support systems I would have after surgery. We talked through some emotional eating problems that I have had in the past and then he gave me advice on how to handle these after the surgery. It only took about 45 minutes total. Again just be honest and use him as a resource to deal with any challenges you feel you may experience.

Nutrition classes were a little confusing at first. It was a small group of about 5. Went pretty fast. Don't worry about getting it ALL at once. Just focus on whatever phase you are in at that time.

Surgery went great. Nursing staff is fabulous. Just take toiletries and slippers. I took flip flops. I am also glad I took my iPod. One of the Fluid pumps made a lot if noise overnight and I wouldn't have slept well if I didn't have music.

Pain was very tolerable. Really didn't need pain meds at home. More stiff and sore than in pain. That only lasted about 5 days and got easier and easier with each day. Walk walk walk. It helps a lot . I had my surgery in a Thursday and was back at work with no problems on Tuesday. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I am down 33 pounds since April 1. Yippee

What else can I help with? When is your surgery.

Thanks jhood! I will keep you posted and hope you will do the same. I wish I could help you out with the coaching visits, but I didn't have to do those. I had to do a 6-month supervised diet with the Dietician. I started this process July 1st of last year and have been through a lot, so I might be able to help with other aspects, such as the psych eval or pre-op class.

I had my surgery at Shawnee Mission Hospital on 3/25/14, and Dr Hoehn did it. It was a very easy surgery, and I had hardly any pain at all, but at almost the two month mark I got really sick and was in the hospital for a week. I couldn't eat or drink for 11 days. It was horrible. Plus nobody told me before surgery, but you'd hormones after surgery are all out of wack, and I would cry everyday wishing I had not got the surgery, however I am now a little over three months out and I am feeling wonderful, and I am happy that I did it. Plus I have lost almost 60 lbs. I weigh 186 now. I feel so much better about myself now. My goal weight is 120, but I am happy :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
