Menstrual Cycle and Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

I am roughly 4 months post-op and have a concern about my menstrual cycle. I have always been regular for the most part. Stress has made it a little off at times. I am wondering if rapid weight loss can effect your cycle? I am assuming it can.

I am almost a week late and wonder if it could be due to the weight loss - almost 68 lbs. I have heard that it is easier to get pregnant once weight comes off and was told that it is not advisable to become pregnant for at least 18 months post-op. I do not think that is the case, but it is still a concern. More likely is the stress from work combined with the hormonal changes (that is if weight loss can do that).

Any information would be appreciated. Have others had this is issue with irregularity and need to be put on birth control? If you can get pregnant easier, maybe birth control is not a bad idea?

Hi Jill,

When you loose weight quickly it can effect your menstrual cycle a bit. A would put a call into your surgery center on Monday and tell them what is going on as well.

I had my surgery April 28th with my and have found that my hormones have been a little bit more intense since.

Good luck.

My cycle went hay wire. I missed my cycle for about 6 weeks, then got it back to back within the same month. But like the previous poster stated, check with your doc just to be safe. I took a pg test just to be safe as well.

My cycle is normally irregular but has been spot on since surgery. It definitely can cause either. I'm 45 though, and I'm not expecting regular periods to last.

Mine has been wacky, much heavier with severe clotting post vsg I'm 5 months out now and my 1st cycle post vsg sent me to ER Due to heavy clotting and menstruating plus scary dizziness. Cramps are apparent but not as heavy as pre op ironically

I just took the "plan b one step emergency contraception" yesterday so I hope it doesn't negatively affect my next flow

My periods have always been regular but since my surgery I have had one of them late by more than a week and the next one was a week early. They have all been less than they were before my surgery. I know with rapid weight lose your hormones go all over the place and that will make your cycle all over the place.

I had an irregular period before surgery. The day of my surgery was when my period came down. But ever since surgery it has been coming down every month. So yes, it will affect your menstrual cycle.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
