Credible Research Materials On Banding and Related Issues

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

A member's feedback in my Yau/Cobourn thread gave me an idea to start a new thread where we can post credible reseach materials on banding and related matters. Maybe someone has already started one. If not, here is one.

I will start the thread by attaching a very new reasearch finding on Lapbanding published in January in the peer reviewed Journal of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity.

For those who may not be familiar with journal publication, a peer-reviewed professional or academic journal is the highest form of publication (in terms of recognition and content validity) for any professional or academic. It means that the research report you submit for publication in the specific journal is reviewed and critiqued by other experts within the field. Many reports are rejected while others are subjected to multiple revisions before it is accepted for publication. There are few that get their report published without revision. Of course, among peer-reviewed journals themselves, there is an order of "prestigiousness" which means that some journals are deemed more recognized/prestigious than others.

For more research findings on obesity surgery, here is a link to one peer-reviewed journal site: http://www.obesitysurgery.com/

I look forward to more research materials from members of this site.

great article, nice find!! Being a health science student, I can appreciate a medical journal article. And i love that fact that it has good things to say of the lap-band. It eases my mind for my surgery coming soon.

Cat , thankyou, it's so much better for us to have FACTS , sometimes things regarding this surgery seem overwhelmingly negetive....but when you come right down to the facts it WORKS so thanks and I think everyone should read the study:clap2:.

Yeah....and unfortunately, many go the bypass route because they can't afford the band (or choose not to afford it....I mean...I'm sure most of us don't have $16 grand to through away....we just go into debt for it!).

I know a couple of people who got the bypass but who desperately wanted the band.

I wish provincial health care would play "catch up" on this issue so that the band can be just as a viable (& covered) option as the bypass.

Every research article helps point the gov't in that direction.

Very interesting Cat. Now, 2 years later, I would love to see the comparisons of the AGB to the other bariatric surgeries for weight loss and weight maintenance.

thanks i like that too the Yukon health care are telling me there is not enough research in to the lap band thats why they don't want to cover it but they will pay for the bypass.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
