SandyM 1,956 Posted May 10, 2014 I got a new ninja for mothersday and am trying out shakes. Our local gym makes an awesome shake with Wendys frosty consistency. Anyone know how I can get this consistency with my shakes. I use whey Protein.< /p> 1 txdiva reacted to this
B-52 7,113 Posted May 11, 2014 Add ice cubes.... 1 catfish87 reacted to this
SandyM 1,956 Posted May 11, 2014 I'm doing that and thought maybe the ice cubes melting might be what's thinning them down. T tried flax seed powder (got that idea from the net) but don't like the flavor it adds, plus don't notice much thickness
princessheather 114 Posted May 11, 2014 Ok tiny pinch of xanthum powder. It is a thickener
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted May 11, 2014 Definitely second the recommendation for xanthan gum. Just use a pinch - it makes your shake thick and creamy, like a store-bought milkshake. You can also add a tablespoon of sugar-free, fat-free pudding mix -- but to me the xanthan gum works better and also the pudding will add calories and carbs to your shake. xanthan gum sounds like some weird industrial product but it is all natural -- they sell it at my local whole food coop as well as in the natural & organic section of my local huge megamart type supermarket. SandyM 1,956 Posted May 11, 2014 I saw guar gum at the health food store, but don't remember seeing xanthan gum. Guess I'll have to look.
princessheather 114 Posted May 12, 2014 Xanthum gum is usually in any bulk food section. Although I saw it in big bags of red mills brand but it's way expensive that way and a little goes a long way. I just bought a tiny bit in the bulk section and it has lasted me forever.
catfish87 3,471 Posted May 12, 2014 I also use frozen fruit (especially banana's) to thicken. I use my ninja most mornings and make mine by adding about a cup of crushed ice, a scoop of chocolate Protein powder, half cup almond milk, half a frozen banana, sometimes I'll put a couple tablespoons of PB2 in it, and/or a tbls of Chia seeds. It ends up the consistency of a "Frosty". If I've got banana's that are getting too ripe, I'll peel them and put them in a ziploc bag in the freezer.
SandyM 1,956 Posted May 12, 2014 Thanks princess heather and catfis. Will try both of these. Catfish how long do you blend?
catfish87 3,471 Posted May 12, 2014 Catfish how long do you blend? about 30 seconds to a minute. I have the Ninja with the 3 different size containers and use the smallest one. I start with crushed ice though, so you may need to blend longer using cubes.
SandyM 1,956 Posted May 12, 2014 Catfish, tried it and it worked. Guess I was putting too much liquid in it. Now just to play with some flavors☺️
Bandista 7,466 Posted May 13, 2014 When I'm "bad" I use Muscle Milk vanilla and frozen peaches to make a pretty fabulous shake. I know it has crappy stuff in it, but I figure once in a while who cares. I put Chia seeds and flax seeds in just about everything, plus I use collagen. One tablespoon of collagen jacks up the Protein content of a shake or Greek yogurt considerably. Anyway, a lovely smoothie can make me feel like I'm eating ice cream or something. New Nina 40 Posted May 17, 2014 My dr said to add Protein Shakes to my 3 regular meals. Anyone recommend any good tasting, lo cal Protein Drinks?
cheryl2586 3,053 Posted May 17, 2014 I have a hell of a blender (big boss) and I use a cup of milk, 1 or two scoops of Protein powder and frozen fruit I add a cup and a half. Comes out just like ice cream. I use vanilla Protein Powder. I love blueberries and pineapple the best but Walmart has a mixed fruit frozen of pineapple, mango, peach and strawberry that I love. If it doesn't get thick enough I add more fruit.
