No order to do pulmonary or gastrointestinal. ..

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone went to my 3rd consultation today with my 3rd dr. Finally feel right and comfortable with everything. My question is this the other 2 consultations the doctors wanted me to do pulmonary and gastrointestinal along with the others, cardio, radiology, nutrition, psych. Just wondering if anyone else didn't have to take pulmonary and gastrointestinal test also? Was always under the impression that was a mandatory part of the process.

I only have to go to the Nutritionalist twice (One-on-one and a group) and have a Psych eval. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to see any medical doctors.

Did it feel weird? It's like all along on my research I've never come across anyone not ordered to perform these two test so was a bit taken back for a second.

At first I wasn't sure whether to be excited or worried at the lack of clearances. But my hospital has 4 surgeons performing sleeves since 2011 and has only had 2 leaks/complications. I considered that pretty good and they are also a Center of Excellence, so I'm confident that they know what they're doing.

I will have to have a pre-op EKG and blood panel at the hospital a week before surgery.

Good luck to you!

Thank you, I did the blood work and had my cardio done last month, and also my radiology so I'm ready to go. Lol just means a faster date.

I didn't have a gastrointestinal test and I did have a sleep study because my PCP ordered it thinking I would need it but my surgeon didn't require those tests either.

So I'm thinking the test aren't really insurance requirements but depending on the surgeon. This is really new news to me. But definitely not complaining lol

Correct, my insurance required nutrition class, BMI requirement of 40 or higher unless I had something like diabetes, a psych evaluation and of course the surgeon is going to need lab work, EKG, and chest x-ray. If older than 50, my surgeon requires a stress test.

O my cardiologist ordered a stress test. He was definitely trying to talk me out of surgery smh I know he meant well but it's my choice.

My surgeon didn't order any additional testing for me. I have no co-morbidities at this time, so ther that the routine pre-op testing (blood work, ekg) I don't have to do any additional tests. I think it depends on surgeon preference, and whether or not a patient has any other health issues.

I am sitting in the cardiologist office right now for my clearance I always get nervous that it only takes one doctor to not give me the clearance!! Fingers crossed no one puts a stop to anything!!! ????????

So far as I know, I have very few tests to do as I am self paying. I find it odd, but I know the surgeon knows what he is doing. Glad I'm not alone on this one

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
