Warning: stupid question

Recommended Posts

Never thought to ask this when I went for my last follow up and honestly I'm a little embarrassed to call up the team to ask this question so I thought I would poll the troops here until I go for my next followup and can add it to our conversation. Here goes: if your meal is a liquid, like Premier Protein drink, do you still have to wait an hour afterwards before drinking anything else? ( my surgeon requires not drinking for an hour after eating but I know others are different).

Yes still wait an hour after drinking Protein Shakes. Even though it is a liquid it still helps with satiety and your body does take longer to digest it. This is the rule I always followed and it has always worked for me.

My doctor has me wait a half hour.

Thanks! I will continue to wait the hour. Because it's so thin it moves through my pouch quickly but I worried that if I drank something after, it would keep me from absorbing all the Protein.

I don't think it will affect absorption of Protein, it just washes all the Fluid out quicker. Good luck :) You're doing really good!

Not a stupid question at all! I asked my doctor the same thing! It has to do with staying full longer, so yes, I still wait.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I think I was hoping to be able to "wash" the taste out of my mouth. I'm not a big fan of Protein shakes and they leave a bad taste. So, now I just chew a piece of gum for a minute and poof! problem solved! :-)

We are told to wait a half hour and ABSOLUTELY no gum!!! If accidentally swallowed it needs to be surgically removed. I take a sip after eating, just to rinse my mouth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
