Struggling not to drink with food

Recommended Posts

This is proving to be much harder than I expected! Given how long it takes to eat anything, I wind up going for about 90 minutes without liquid. Anyone have some strategies for making this easier?

Thanks!

Jenny

it is hard...somedays harder than others for me...I struggle with it, because I'm a "drinker" ... always sipping on fluids...so not having them before/during/after meals is difficult... good luck... I'd be interested in some "tricks" if folks have some ;)

Dare I ask what exactly happens if you do drink Water during eating?

@@sjidaho Drinking is discouraged for a couple of reasons.

First, it allows the food to slip through your sleeve. This means you will be hungry sooner and your food will not fill you up. This leads to overeating and eventually leads to weight gain, especially after your honeymoon is over and your appetite returns. This is where you see people who have lost 100 lbs. start gaining it back in year 2 or 3.

Take a look at this video that shows what happens when you drink with your meal.

For me personally, when I eat my solid Protein first, the liquid piles up on top of it and comes up my esophagus. Really gross. Drinking with sliders, like Cookies, is even worse for me because the drink just liquifies the carbs and sugar so they flow right through. This is a path to the dark side :P

I was always a big drinker with meals. 4-5 glass of Water. It's taken time but I have completely conquered the eating/drinking thing. You can get over it, just stay committed.

Unfortunately, I have no tricks to offer for this particular issue. It was just willpower and a vision of the fat coming back that kept me on the straight and narrow.

Thanks for your support. I certainly wasn't suggesting that I should drink with meals, just wondering how you get used to it, My surgeon says I only have to wait a half hour.

In any case, it's tricky sometimes. I'm having a little trouble getting used to it, but I've only been on solids for four days!

(TMI ALERT) I accidentally drank with a meal when I started on solid foods and it made me have diarhea about 10 minutes later. Not pleasant.

One thing I am working on is to make sure that meats and fish are moist. Dry food just gets hung up. I had to give up Peanut Butter for this reason. It gets stuck in my throat and I cannot drink enough Fluid to wash it down. So, if my foods have some moisture built in, it is easier to hold off with a beverage.

@Pretty_In_Purple that's rather unusual...that will not happen each time or for everyone... that's the first time I've heard someone state that...but, of course, I'm not on here 24/7 ;)

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
