May 5th Surgery Date

Recommended Posts

Just had my sleeve done on Monday, May 5th. Looking for a buddy that has or has a surgery date close to mine. My mind is going crazy with questions!

I've actually had most of my questions answered on here since I posted last night. This is an amazing forum, very informative! How are you doing after surgery?

Yeah, I'm really glad I found this site.. it's already been so helpful!

I'm doing pretty well.. I feel slightly bad because I've been having trouble getting my Water and Protein shakes in like I should still. I just started having some issues with mild nausea today, which makes just the thought of a Protein shake seem horrible. When I met with my nutritionist and she was telling me how important it was to drink even if I didn't want to, I kinda blew her off.. like, it won't be hard to drink water! I might not be able to eat much, but I can definitely drink things! Well.. I was wrong, she totally knew better than me. Other than that though, I have nothing to complain about!

What about you, how have you been?

You're already drinking Protein Shakes? Man, I'm on clear liquid diet only (water, crystal light, beef or chicken broth and sugar free popsicles). After day 2 I haven't had a problem keeping anything down. I understand what you mean when you say you thought the nutritionist was crazy about the Fluid intake, I thought the same exact thing. I would double check with your doctor that Protein shakes are OK to be drinking right now, they may just be too much for your system right now. I'm about to call my doctor because the past 2 days I've had an upset stomach and diarrhea which makes no sense to me, at all. I'm sure that was TMI, sorry, lol. How are you doing with your walking?

In my diet packet, it says to start a full liquid diet on day 3. So, according to my instructions, I'm allowed Protein shakes, yogurt, creamy Soups, that kinda thing. It says always do a Protein Drink first, at least 2 a day. I've only had one so far and it took me 5 hours to finish it. Now just the thought of drinking one makes me feel kinda sick. The gas-x strips aren't really helping either. That taste is just totally grossing me out.. I haven't even really been into the popsicles or jell-o either, so pretty much all I've had is Water. I think it will be ok, just because I've seen a variety of different pre-op diets posted.. some don't start full liquid stuff till later. I know Protein is really important though. Honestly, I think I'm kinda scared of losing my hair.. which is why I feel so compelled to go ahead and push myself to do it. Realistically, I know it will probably take longer than 2 weeks for that to actually become an issue.

Walking hasn't really been too bad for me. Course, I say that, but I haven't really started doing anything more than just leisurely walks yet. So far I've just been doing a couple laps around my apartment parking lot. I've also been making excuses to go to Target or the mall a million times to wander around. I have a fitbit which tracks how much I've walked and I've tried so far to get at least 3000 steps in a day. I think once my incision pain gets a little better and I feel more comfortable getting sweaty, I'll start increasing my pace. It's kinda weird, but for me.. the fact that I've spent so little time eating has made me feel pretty restless. The good part about it is, it makes me want to get out and be more active instead of just sitting around and stuffing my face!

How's your walking going? Are you having any issues with pain still?

Walking is going OK for me, I guess. I walk on my treadmill for 6 or 7 minutes every hour or two. I actually made my husband go buy me a fitbit yesterday so I'm excited to start using it as a tool to track stuff. I'm getting ready to head out right now and do some shopping. I can walk for miles while shopping and never notice, lol. I'm just chomping at the bit to get out of the house today. Hope you have a good day and a happy mothers day weekend.

I'm not doing as well as I would like. How long is this soreness in the abdomen supposed to last? I am more sore tonight than I have been. I might have over done it today but not sure. I feel like I have a broken rib on my left side. I can't inhale completely and short of breath. Is anyone else experiencing this?

You might want to contact your doctor especially if you are having shortness of breath. I don't have any abdominal pain anymore just pressure from air and gas still.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
