5 months and rocking it out!

Recommended Posts

I grew up in a family that struggled with weight. I was always very active as a teen and contolled my weight well. I got married at 20 and had my first child at 21 and was in an abusive marriage. My weight ballooned throughout the years. I was up and down. 2 kids later and a life changing accident and a divorce in '94 and remarried into '99. 2 more kids later and a separation happening decided to go to a Bariatric seminar with the help of my counselor. I considered it years ago but got nervous. In 2012 i was 378lbs and climbing so i started yet another diet. By 2013 i had managed to lose about 40lbs but was so depressed. I started counseling and she encouraged me to at least check it out so i did. Within 2 months i was having surgery. I had to quit smoking and said goodbye to my old life in that time. I put on about 15 quiting smoking but it was worth it. On Dec 6, 2013 i started my pre-op Protein diet. I lost 23lbs in those 2 wks. I stuck to the program, never cheated and drank about a gallon of Water a day. A far cry from 5000 cal a day and 2 2 liters of pop and half a pack or better of cigs a day. My surgery date was Dec 18, 2013. I left the hospital the next day and spent a couple days at my parents and then 4 days post op i went to IL to my in laws to recouperate. I was almost instantly drinking 80+ grams of protein and about 3 bottles of water. I am the exception to the rule i think. I healed real fast. I did my daily walking and with in my first 2 wks i felt about normal again. At my 3 wk appt they told me i could start some light exercise like walking and light weights so i did. I hit the gym but did so with caution. At my 6 wk appt i was down to 304. It was amazing. I felt great and was eating at least my 60g a day. There are days when i just dont feel like eating but always make sure i get in my minimal grams and water. It happens every so often. I do not cheat and watch my sugar and fat intake closely as well. I consider this a gift and therefore take good care of it. It has been difficult at times. I have hit a couple plateaus and theres days when i just dont want to go to the gym but i stick it out and remember tue end to the means. I have 4 kids. 2 in their 20's and 2 more still at home. None of them have ever seen me at a healthy weight so i am so excited for them too. Since I have been losing weight i have taken the kids ice skating, roller skating, and bike riding without my tires going flat mid ride. I know go to the gym 5 days a week and get help from a trainer when i start plateauing so i can move it along. I try to fit in 80-100g of protein and drink a minimum of 6 bottles of water a day sticking around 900-1000 cal. Its a work in progress but i am so excited. It also helps that i have a great support group surrounding me. Im just excited more for my kids than myself. They will get to enjoy me, or put up with me(lol), for many more years to come. A healthy weight and active lifestyle are my big goals.

Great work Kim! The decision and surgery itself is a investment in our own lives, I still have a ways to go at 2.5 months out but it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself too. Congrats on your success and sharing it with your WLS family :-)

Today I had to start physical therapy for my knee. I had an accident back in 1993 and had surgery to repair my leg and well now i have severe osteoarthritis and cant ever get a knee replacement cuz my lower bone is so bad. To male ot worse my leg healed crooked so I dont stand straight. i have about an inch difference from my left to my right leg. With the rapid weight loss and working out 5-6 days a week i feel tons better but my knee is taking a toll with the massive increase in activity. Now I have therapy exercises to do and have to wear a knee band to help put my knee cap back on place. It will all be worth it in the end. I just want it healed up so I can do bike riding with the kids without hurting so much. Hope all have a great weekend.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
