My insurance is requiring a 3mon Dr. regulated diet. Has anyone had to diet so long?

Yes, I had to do at least 6 months pre-operative dietician appointments, with 5 appointments. I had to weigh-in and everything. She would write down a list of suggestions and I would try to follow them to the best of my ability.

I did rather well, I think. My ticker says I lost 32 pounds, which is awesome, but I was down 40 not too long ago. My journey has already begun!

My Bariatric Coord. says to try and lose about 7 more before surgery which is looking about 4-5 weeks away. No set date yet. I don't think it will be too much of a problem.

I don't regret going through the pre-op diet at all, in fact, I think it really helps a ton with what you will have to go through immediately following the diet. It also greatly increases not only going through the surgery to shrink your liver, but for long time success. My mind is already prepared before even going into the surgery.

I would suggest to anyone it might be a good idea to talk with your doctor about starting some kind of good eating/weight loss regimen prior to surgery, regardless if they demand it or not!

We're all in this together! :)

My doc didn't say anything about dieting prior but the dietician told me to cut down the week prior to my surgery which is 1 November. So I have a few more days of normal eating !! :whoo::whoo:;)

I'm on day two of a two-week pre-op low-carb diet. My doctor said he wasn't too concerned about shrinking my liver due to my size but I'm going to follow it to a T. I'm not weighing myself but I am taking this whole process seriously!

My surgeon requires 5 days of Clear Liquids before surgery to shrink the liver. Three days post op clear liquids. Then Full liquids 4 two weeks and then mushies or soft diet for two weeks. Then solid food as tolerated.

I began a liquid diet on Monday to prepare me for the clear liquid phase. I am eating Slim fast High Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch and then a small meal at dinner and Water lots and lots of water.

I will begin the full clear liquid diet on Nov 4th.

So far it has not been so bad. I do not notice a whole lot of hunger. But the Protein is the key to that I believe.

Kristin:)

I am so scared to do not loose those 15 pounds I have to prior my surgery! I have so little time for it too! I have no clue how to do it..what about if they won't let me do it because I didn't loose?

My Doctor wants me on a liquid diet 2 weeks prior as well. My BMI was 47. I still have a few months to go, so I am trying it out a couple of mornings a week.

Yes, my surgeon requires us to do 2 weeks of the induction phase of the Atkins diet. He says this process shrinks the liver by excreting any excess sugars and this helps you surgically as well with post-op recovery. I am doing this now.:)

Will have to do 10 days of liquids before surgery date. I'm worried also like everyone else, but if I want the surgery I'll have to abide to the doctor's rule and I also understand it's very important for me too. It'll be good to cleanse my body anyways, I know it'll make me feel good.

Dr. sends me to his Nutritionist. she put me on a high Protein, low,low carb, and low fat diet. I actually was only on it for 12 days and lost 13 #. They wanted me to lose at least 5 before surg, guess you could say I was very compliant.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
