I was with 1 Dr for 2 years and had to do the 6 month supervised diet and exercise, (2005) then I got pregnant with twins. Fast forward to October 2007, started the 6 months again. January 2008, new insurance, NEW DR, no 6 month pre anything, and no pre-op diet, he wants me to stay the way I am, I have so far since Oct. lost 20 lbs. this is about when I got pregnant the last time, it was between 20 and 30 pounds on the pre diet. I'm on the schedule for Feb 5th.

My pre-op diet is basically a less-strict version of the induction phase of Atkins for 10 days -- no bread, potatoes, Pasta, rice or sugar. I know I am a carb addict so that will be tough, but I will do it because I have to.

You'll do fine! I had to do a full liquid diet for a week prior to surgery, but it meant also no sugar at all. I felt cruddy for a few days, but now, I'm not craving carbs anymore. I have fibromyalgia and my symptoms have lessened a lot. I'm pretty sure it's because I'm off the sugar.

Yes, I am aware of that. He stated that. However, with other doctors not requiring it it also lends itself to being for compliancy. Like my post says, I am glad he is having me do it. I need a jump start. Especially since I have been eating everything under the sun since I know I am getting it done. :)

I know I am going to get railed for this, but if you're going to a doc who doesn't require the pre-op diet, you should investigate and get a new doctor who knows what they're doing. my doc is one of the top docs and the guy who fought for insurance to cover this procedure. i'm glad you're getting through it... talk to your doctor about the fact that you ate "everything under the sun" - i broke my diet and wound up talking to my doc.

The pre-op diet is mostly to shrink the liver. It also has the advantages of losing weight around the airway making things easier(safer) for the anesthesiologists, improving sleep apnea, blood sugar control, blood pressure, etc.

In my opinion, pre-op weight loss is most important for men, patients with diabetes and BMI>45. I ask patients to lose 10 pounds for each of these. In other words, if I have a male, diabetic patient with BMI>45 I ask him to lose 30 pounds pre-op.

If I have a non-diabetic female BMI<45, I don't make them do any pre-op diet as it isn't really necessary in my opinion and doesn't change their risk or ease of the operation.

I think Dr, Watkins has the right idea, from a surgeons point of view, but I would add that from a mental state, a short pre-op diet can boost the inital weight loss and since some patients might not lose much until they get restriction, the inital weight loss can be a mental boost and actually keep them on track until they get some restriction.

I also think someone with elevated LFT levels, that might be under 45 BMI and non diabetic, would benefit from a pre-op diet.

Just my 2 cents!

That's the diet I'm on. 30 gms of carbs a day not including green leafy veggies. I've been on it less than a week. Went in for my 2nd appt today and I've lost 8 lbs! Holy cow! They also said it was most all fat and very little Water weight. Between this and the liquid diet two days prior to surgery my liver should be in FINE shape! :huh2:

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
