Hospitals in the Chicago land area.

Recommended Posts

Has anybody had the gastric sleeve surgery done in the Chicago land area? If so, can someone give me some recommendations? I'm going to a seminar at the University of Illinois medical center next week, but might wanna look into other hospitals for this procedure.

I had mine done at Loyola University Medical Center 12/23/2013.. Dr. Chand developed the Bariatric program for the Cleveland Clinic, and then came to Loyola a couple of years ago. He developed the Bariatric program here and teaches Bariatric, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgery for Loyola University. I knew when I learned all of that, that I would be in good hands. I have done well with no complications and the hospital staff was outstanding. I am a retired hospital housekeeping supervisor and I can tell you that my room was SPOTLESS! Also, it was a private room. I loved that detail.

I had my lap band at UIC, but was very unhappy with my care. If you are willing to go to the south west burbs I can't say enough great things about Dr. Lahmann. He was my followup provider after my surgeon moved to California. Dr. Lahmann also removed my gall bladder, he is a kind and caring man, and the staff is really amazing too. Dr. Joyce is very good as well. http://bmisurgery.org/_live/index.php?ID=team&PERSON=lahmann

I had mine done by Dr. Frederick Tiesenga at Westlake Hospital in Elmwood Park. I've had a great recovery and the experience itself was positive. Quick insurance approval/turnaround. Clean, private room. I feel like I know his staff. There have been a couple of post-op communications issues (when I am supposed to go for follow-ups, etc) but those are pretty much clear now. It's interesting, because without the huge university or religious affiliation it almost feels like a standalone operation, which has its positives and negatives depending on what you prefer.

Thanks Mzdiva3, I have my first doctors appointment with Dr. Elli on June 6th.

He is a man if very little words, but in my surgery date he was so down to earth. At first after surgery they had me jn a room with a roommate. He had me moved to a huge private room. He must really have some clout around there to do that. My follow up appt is June5 wow 1 more day and we would have potentially met! Have you seen the nut yet? Where are you in your process?

No, I haven't met with the nut yet. I guess he will tell me what all I need to do at my first appointment with him. I currently have the lapband so in getting the revision sleeve. I'm just hoping I don't have to do the 6 months weight lost management program. Are you on Facebook? If so what is your name on there so I can send you a friend request?

My sis is going through the same process as you and they made her go through the 6 months nut. Hopefully you won't have to.

Oh ok, I talked with my insurance provider and asked them do I need to do the 6 months weight lost program and they told me it will be up to the doctor. So I'm gonna explain to Dr. Elli, that I'm having so many complications from the band so hopefully that will help. I'm gonna send you a friend request on Facebook under the name Lisa Smith.

I've got nothing but good things to say about Dr Eric Hungness at Northwestern Memorial in downtown Chicago. Super nice guy. The team is all very welcoming and open. The nurses and staff post op are great - one of the nurses even called me after I got home to check in on me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
