I am serioeusly considering gastric sleeve surgery. I eat very low cr, basically like the paleo plan. I have lost alot of weight eating only about 500 calories a day, but now that I am eating " normally" I have basically gained what I have lost. The only way that I found that I can maintain is to excercise about 1hour to 1.5 hours 4-5 days a week.

I wqs hoping that the sleeve would decrease my hunger so that I can eat less, as my problem is not waht I eat but rather how much I eat.

I am concerned becaue I just read in another forum that after months post op, people start getting hungry. I read that you have to restrict your eating to 1 cup of food at time even though you may still be hungry.

My question, is why get the sleeve if this is true. I can restrict my self to a cup of food per meal and still be hungry without the sleeve. I actually eat healthy food so I don't need the sleeve to stop me from eating massive amounts of carbs as I don't eat many carbs int he first place. What is the point of getting the sleeve ?

So the sleeve is a tool used for people who eat more then the amount they should. It doesn't matter carb, Protein, chocolate chips.. Most of us bored eat, emotional eat, and sociably eat to excess. So having a restriction is what stops us from over indulging. Now, for the hunger... I feel hunger. I am 26 months post-op. If I don't eat, I get hungry. But once I get my cup of food or so, I am fine. Satisfied. The people who say they are still hungry... That's usually head hunger. Maybe they have been having a stressful week. Maybe the kids are screaming. We have used food for a "comfort" for so long, it's hard not to turn back to that.

So it's awesome that you already do the low carb thing. I did that for 10 years before my surgery. Lost 20 pounds, gained 30. Lost the 30, gained 35. So it is a full lifestyle change. I do eat normally. I eat pizza, burgers, and fries... But every so often. But instead of the full double quarter pounder with cheese, a large fry, and a large coke, I can eat 3/4 of the mcdouble, with 3 or 4 fries. Life does go back to normal. You just won't be able to eat a 32 oz steak and a baked potato. I hoped that helped a little bit. I know I asked myself why I really wanted to do this.. My answer... For me.

Here's the difference. You're not really hungry. You've just taught your brain that you need to keep eating due to the habit you created over the years. The sleeve will give you the time it takes to develop new habits of eating just what you need.

Your body can get by just fine on the low calorie limited intake. It's the head hunger that is convincing you that you need more.

All the sleeve is gonna do is limit what you eat. The rest is up to you. Can you outsmart it. If that is you intention, then sure, you can eat around the limits. The idea is to take advantage of the tool and use it to re-teach your brain. In order to do that, you have to be on board with both the desire and the discipline to succeed. ;)

I do find that I get hungry now adays, but the difference with having the sleeve (im almost a year out) is that if I eat my Protein first, I get full after just a couple of ounces and stay full longer. I have to stay away from breads, rice, Pasta, chips & sweets, because those things dont make me feel full & only make me want more.

So IMO you sound like a good candidate for the sleeve, because the paleo (and paleo-esque) eating is the BEST way to allow the sleeve to work the way it is supposed to. The rule is: protein first.

Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
