4 mths post op and still unhappy

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I had my surgery back on the 14th of January and after some complications which are still ongoing ie really really bad reflux (never had it before) and acute kidney failure I just feel my decision will be one I regret for the rest of my life. I am 4 months post op, so miserable, still tired - I just don't know what to do anymore. Can anyone tell me if they feel the same and when does it get better??? I so want to be my happy normal self again

I'm so sorry. I had a few complications and a not so great first month, but it did get better. I hope someone will have comforting advice to share. Hang in there.

Unhappy sleever, look up R. J.'s beginning…..she has many, many posts on here that are so encouraging. She's had a horrible time, yet she keeps such a good attitude. Go to the search and put in complications. You will find so much help from so many people. Stay on these boards… these are the people that can help you, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. The gentleman that has this site Alex, is great and will help in any way he can. You have found your support system here! Good luck. One day soon you'll be very proud of your decision to have this surgery. I am so sorry you've had such a hard time. This, too, shall pass.

Happy Losing,

Mississippi Girl

You've got to read RJ's story. She is am amazing person with a tenacious spirit. I don't think I could have gone through what she went through. Good luck to you. I'm 2 months post tomorrow and seem to be joining the slow losers club. Otherwise, I've done well and I'm thankful for that. Wishing you better days.

crazyjaney, I'm two months out on 10th and have certainly joined the slow losers club. I am down 21 pounds. I look at it like this…that's 21 I've not gained. I am losing inches when the scales stop, so I'm good with that. you all keep in touch.

Happy Losing,

Mississippi Girl

Just curious...what have you tried to help your reflux and do they know what caused your kidney failure? So sorry you are having such a rough time.

Hi Kindle

So far I have tried 5 different reflux meds and have now been taken off them totally - go back to the doctor in 3 weeks time to maybe have a scope to see if they can see anything. As for my kidney failure this was caused by taking my bp med with nexium, toxins were produced in my body causing my kidneys to shut down 95%. I thought doing this now (I am 41) would make my golden years easier but I am so very unhappy and cry almost every other day. At 4 months I would have thought things would be easier... I totally regret my decision but know I just have it live with it

So sorry you are going thru this, my surgery was Jan 22, 2014. The first couple weeks were rough and I was weak a lot. Better now but still get tired easily. Are you seeing or talking to psyc about your feelings, that is what they are there for and can help at least it helped me a lot. Hope you are seeing a specialist for your kidneys, please hang in there.

acupuncture really helped me tremendously. my stomach was not squeezing. (emptying) i had pain, gas and then would vomit everything back up. couldn't tolerate anything. i was dehydrated and miserable. i went for acupuncture 3 times a week for several weeks and each time i felt better. it took more than 5 months before i felt like i could eat or drink anything more than little sips and bites.... i am much better now. i am 10 months post op and doing well. i have lost 80#, can eat and drink (not a lot, but enough that i am only slowly losing now!) and feel great. but it took a long time.

forgot to mention too, if you are crying every day, you should ask your doc to assess you for depression. it's not unusual for people to get depressed after life changing events. normal part of being human. depression also slows healing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
