What aftercare do you guys get?

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I'm really interested to know what aftercare you guys receive?

Do you have regular check-ups or weigh-ins? Do you have periodic X-rays or scans to check all is ok? Do you have blood or any other kinds of tests to make sure you're not Vitamin deficient?

Is there anything else you have? And how long does your aftercare last?

Thanks x

I am still 6 weeks from surgery however my agreement when scheduling the procedure was for a post op 4 hour class the week after my surgery, a 2 week follow up with dr, a 4 week follow up, additional blood work at some point, a 6? 8? week follow up and then a 6 month followed by a 1 year follow up. I also have the option to attend group support meetings held monthly.

I had to attend all the classes prior to surgery. Then I saw my surgeon at 2 weeks, the 2 mos, blood work will be at 3 mos, and I will see him at 4 mos and 6 mos. He set goals for me for the first year. Only blood work for the first year. I don't know after that. He knows I live 2 hrs from the support group and that I attend it here. LOL

I had two week, one month, three months, six months and will at one year with both surgeon and nutritionist. After that yearly with both surgeon and nutritionist.

At three months and six months I had blood work.

No X-rays needed for I had no problems.

I have the opportunity to contact them any time with problems or questions via phone or internet.

I go monthly or bimonthly to support meetings run by the network of surgeons, nutritionists, therapists, physician assistants and other speakers.

This group takes care of their patients very well.

I had follow-up appts at one week, two weeks and six weeks. Blood work at 6 weeks. I have f/u at three months, six months, nine months and one year, each one with blood work. From that point on, the f/u appts are once a year, with blood work. The patients at my clinic are required to weigh in at the clinic once a month. We are also strongly encouraged to attend regular support group meetings. The surgeons, nurses and other clinc staff are also easily available by phone any time we have concerns or questions.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
