Pre Op Flavored Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all I have a serious problem. So I'm supposed to start my 1 week pre op diet today. So yesterday I go to Wal-Mart and pick up the whey Protein Shake and choose the vanilla flavored. Well today as I'm looking at the sheet my nutritionist gave me apparently I was supposed to get a non flavored Protein shake UGH ! My question is how bad is it if I just used the vanilla flavored? Had anyone else made this same mistake or do I just take it as a loss and go buy another shake and keep this one for later?? Help please thanks everyone :)

you might ask your nut for specific guidance on the brand if not provided. I've heard of unflavored Protein powder but not an unflavored shake. Do the numbers (calories, carbs, Protein etc.) meet or beat what you were supposed to buy?

I've not heard of having to restrict to unflavored before...but check with your drs office as to why....sometimes it's because you can add it to anything so you can get in more Protein... you can probably use it afterwards, so it won't be wasted.

Also, you can go to InsureNutrition.com to get free Protein shakes if your insurance covers it, along with scar cream and possibly vitamins! Just a few minutes to fill out and have it delivered to your door every month...LOVE IT!

the thing with unflavored is that you can add it (sprinkle) on to any food/drink to get in extra Protein.

You can also mix it up with Torani syrups to make up your own blends... have fun with it! Their website is suppose to have recipes too...

Adding flavor is what I did, although I used flavored Protein powder as well. I used ff/ss pudding powders (butterscotch, cheese cake, lemon), crystal light (orange is wonderful in vanilla Protein shakes), sugar free syrups, PB2 and natural pb (careful though its loaded with calories). Be creative! I still drink a shake at least once a day to get my protein in. Oh yeah, I also added Dannon Light and Fit flavored Greek yogurt for added protein and sometimes just the plain. The thing about the pudding powder is when mixed along with the ice it makes your shake thick, so if you can't do the thickness, might not work for you. I had fun with this and coming up with different flavors. My current favorite is the unjury strawberry Sorbet with Crystal Light Raspberry lemonade. I make ice cubes with the lemonade too, so that the flavor isn't diluted by the ice. Enjoy!!

Thanks for this info. Can you put all that stuff in it during the pre-op liquid diet phase?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
