Did you find it difficult to still cook for your loved ones?

I have a DH who is hopeless in the kitchen and a 9 year old daughter who has to eat. Did you find it difficult to do?

Susan,

I found it extremly difficult to cook for my family! In fact, I couldn't even sit down with them at the table while they ate! I bought a lot of things that I didn't like that I knew they would so it didn't bother me as much. I'm not much of an italian eater so I bought them ravioli and tortilini which they love. Plus t.v. dinners helped as well. My DH did a lot of the cooking thank goodness!

They dont want to eat yogurt an cottage cheese for 3 weeks? :heh:

I guess I did'nt really have this problem as my wife could fend for herself and Jr. just eats formula and baby food. What I found to be harder were those social situtations where you did not want to tip people off that I was pre-op, especially when my diet consisted of shakes, pickles and salad.

Mr Yoda is a chef and he actually does the majority of the cooking at home so I didn't have that issue!!!

When I found out about the preop diet I sat my husband down and nicely told him that he could cook for himself or he could starve! :omg:

- actually he has been really good about it, he pretty much fends for himself and most days he and my daughter have eaten by the time I get home from work. So far I haven't had to cook for him since starting Optifast and preparing something for my daughter is pretty easy as she is still a toddler!

Do you think he could give some private lessons to my DH? When we moved in with him his stove and oven were spotless!!! :heh: He only either ate out or frozen food that could be cooked in the microwave! When we were dating I gave him a cookbook and some utensils for his birthday. They too did not get used until I came along.

My mistake was spoiling him completely. Not only do I cook (and very well, I might add), but I make his lunches for work. I AM AN ENABLER!!!

Oh, see, NOW I am just jealous that *I* didn't get to do a pre-op diet. I was tempted with the cottage cheese and yogurt, interested with the no-flavor low/carb diet. But THIS! Now I am simply jealous. shakes, pickles, and salad.Oh yum.....

Optifast baaaaaaaaby. Really, it was not that bad. I find I am the only one that says that, I am starting to think that I am the weird one.

I didn't mind it at all, that and I drank country time lemonaide..lol -=shakes head=- if one of my kids told me they were going to do it now I think I would have a fit...LOL both my kids are very slim and I am happy for them!

eeeek, yeah the pre-op diet is where i'm scared. I will have to do the yogourt/cottage cheese thing for 10 days....I will stick to it for my health and for my surgery to go better, but DAMMMMNNNNN, i think its probably going to be the hardest thing EVER. If i had ANY control on food i wouldnt be this fat!

It WILL be very hard robgoblin (I did it for 14 days) but the silver lining is that it is THE hardest part of the whole journey (at least for me!). Everything else is a piece of cake....so it is kinda kewl to get the hardest part over right at the start!

Yeah, all the 'old-timers' all have amazing results! I even starting talking via MSN to a younger lap bander that i met through this site, his transformation is incredible, and he very much reminds me of myself, it's nice to see someone with whom you can relate to. Although on some level, everyone here relates to eachother.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
