Does anyone take Topamax? Is it safe with our band. Heard it can cause stomach irritation. I'm suffering with Migraines and need relief

Not saying that it's good for you but I tried it. I was desperate for something. I hated the side effects. I felt so drugged out of my mind. I couldn't think, etc. come to find out... In the warning paperwork it states something to the effect that it's not meant with low carb diets.

I take ketorolac (which is an NSAID). I try to minimize how often I take it but that's what works for me.

Drinking more Water has seemed to diminish the frequencies / intensity of my Migraines. Hope you feel better.

I was taking topamax before I was banded. They have a "sprinkle" pill that is a good option but the taste of it made me SO sick! I just ended up not taking it anymore after being on it for 3 years. I felt it was no longer effective and plus I couldn't handle the taste of the sprinkle. My dr acted like it was fine to take after being banded. If it isn't, I would also suggest verapamil. It worked well for me for awhile.

I take topomax for Migraine. My Neuro put me on it after I was banded and I haven't really had any issues except for some tingling and numbness in the extremities which is common and I remember from the first time I had it. That only happened in the beginnning or if I miss a dose and I get tingly the next time I take it. Igt does make me very tired though. I told my neuro I was low to no carbing and he said it's not an issue. The plus side is that is can often lead to loss of appetite and is used in conjunction with phentermine as a weight loss aide. If anything, it will help your progress. I can see the concern with the LC diet because of acidosis since topomax affects metabolic CO2 levels as does LC diet. My neuro has me go in for Basic Metabolic Profile bloodwork to make sure my CO2 levels don't get too high. If you are concerned you can always ask your Dr.

I went from 1 or 2 Migraines a year to about 9 a month. After a year or so of this my doctor had me try Topamax. I've been on 25 mg Topamax., once a day, for the past three weeks and I'm very happy with it. I've only had the beginnings of 3 migraines (immediately took my Relpax) and they went immediately away. I feel like I've got my life back. My only side effects are a slight loss of appetite (which I'm not unhappy about) and a little tingling in my feet. Well worth it.

I've taken 200 mg Topamax for years for Migraines and I was banded in December. I've not had any trouble. Unfortunately it has not ever helped me with weight loss! Bummern

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
