Intro - gastric sleeve in August

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new to the Bariatric Pal site. Hoping to some support and info. I haven't told anyone (except my parents and boyfriend) about my plan for surgery in August, so I'm feeling a little alone in terms of the experience.

I'm currently in month 3 of my medically supervised weight loss. Hadn't lost much weight until now (+/- 3 lbs)...I watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" so I decided to try a juice fast and it's going well, down 5 lbs. I don't know how long I can fast, but I figured getting used to a liquid diet couldn't hurt, and hopefully get a head start on my weight loss.

I'm 5'4, my BMI is 40 and I'd ultimately like to lose ~85 lbs to get down to 150.

Anyone else have an August surgery? I'm 85% decided on the sleeve. Very hard to weigh all the pros and cons.

Nice to meet you all. -L

You might not want to get below a Bmi of 40, you need to check with your surgeon to see what weight they submit for insurance approval.

I have thank you. :) I don't lose eligibility if I go below 40 provided it was above 40 (or 35 with comorbities) at the time I applied with insurance.

@@LeeBee17 I too am 5'4" inches and am scheduled for VSG on August 4. I chose the VSG because even though it is permanent, it does not involve rearranging the intestines. Another reason I chose it is because my current weight is 244 and 100 lbs is about all I need/want to lose and much of the research I did stated that this is line with VSG results.

Hi Patricia, that's what I liked about the sleeve too, it keeps your body close to normal functioning. I have a tiny voice in the back of my head wondering if the malabsorption component would help me be more successful, but my doctor says for someone at my BMI (and yours!) the sleeve and the bypass are equally effective, might as well opt for the least invasive.

Good luck with everything.

I too am getting surgery in august, on the 26th. My insurance has a 6 month waiting period for the surgery. I started the year in January at 375 I've been watching my calories, stopped soda, fast food... I also started Zumba twice a week. I'm currently at 335 and doing well. At least this time I'll keep the weight off!

Oh Zumba is a good idea, I'd like to do that! I've just increased my walking to about 30 mins/day but I'll have to switch it up at some point. Good luck with everything :)

Hi LeeBee,

Im having my surgery August 25th. I have decided on the sleeve. I liked that it was a restrictive procedure and from what I have read less complications than being banded. Im currently easing myself in with a low Carb diet and jusf getting myself used to eating three healthy low carb meals a day ( 3 meals has always been my biggest challenge) Good luck on your decision. Keep in touch id love to hear how its going.

Hello!

I've been reading this site for a couple of months. I started my 90 days of the physician monitored weight loss yesterday. If all goes according to plan, I should be sleeved in mid-August. I'm so nervous yet excited at the same time!!!! I'm very excited to meet everyone who is going through what I am and/or has done it before. It's very comforting.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
