When can I resume exercise?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am just wondering about how long after surgery it took before you could start exercising again? I am being sleeved on 5/28, and super excited, it's exactly 2 months after I initially saw my surgeon. This is all happening fairly quickly for me, and I've already lost 30 pounds. I've been following my doctors lean and green diet to the T (almost), but I feel like my body is responding really well to the exercising I've been doing. Tone and Core classes, I started a running group, and now aspire to be a certified zumba instructor. I know it was 6 weeks after my C-section I was cleared for moderate activity, does that sound about right? or might this be shorter. I'm really hoping shorter. I am enjoying my group exercise so much. Please let me know your thoughts.

Obviously you'll need to follow your doctor's advice, but my slightly educated guess is that recovery from a c-section is much longer than recovery from the sleeve if the surgery is laproscopic.

I always thought it was quite unfair that after a major surgery like a c-section, they send you home with a 10 pound weight to to carry around and take care of all the time! :) After surviving 3 c-sections, I feel invincible! lol

My understanding is you need to wait at least 6 weeks after surgery, but I waited until my 2 month follow-up appointment and got the green light from my surgeon to start hitting the gym again. I have heard of people getting pulled stomach muscles by starting too soon, so again, I would wait for the surgeon to give me the green light before starting anything.

I started two days after my surgery.. just by walking! I walked and walked (mainly to relieve the gas and horrible feelings from the gas) NO Heavy exercising just lots of walking. I am 3 weeks post op - I have not done any weights or heavy lifting but I am to a point where I am walk/jogging 4 to 5 miles a day. I feel great and am not pushing myself to hard (slow) just enough to get my heart rate up a bit.

I don't plan on getting back to the gym or high intensity work outs for at least another few weeks (maybe 3 or 4 more)

First off, check with your surgeon. I'm finding on these boards that everyone is given different orders from their surgeons. However, mine said I could only walk or use a stationery bike for the first 3 weeks. Start walking in the hospital and continue to walk at least 30 min/day once you've gone home. I added the stationery bike during the second week. At 3 weeks, I was given the green light for any and all exercise. I'm 4 weeks out and in the second week of couch to 5k 3 days a week and the elliptical the other 4 days. I worry about strenuous ab exercises, but my surgeon says I'm fine.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
