People probably find out they're diabetics *after their surgery because they're taking better care of themselves and getting more medical care, and they are finally diagnosed with a condition that existed all along. I know I resisted getting "tagged with diabetes" for several years, and even quit one of my doctors and found another one....serious denial going on!

I see my doc tomorrow, and I'm getting the Byetta. I had my blood drawn, so I'll get my new A1C number (it tells you your average blood sugars for the past 3 months so you know if your diabetes is improving or not) so I'll know if a 50# loss made much difference. I honestly don't expect there to be much improvement. Something tells me my body is going kaputz with the insulin production/sugar metabolism, especially if I have any amount of alcohol. I was blacking out for the first time in 20 years when I'd have more than 3 glasses of wine...now that's not a good thing.....very scary and has made me very paranoid about having anything to drink. I know I know, wine is not in my bandster diet rules, but oh well. I'm really getting psyched to lose the next 30 pounds, whatever it takes, yes even hauling my onion up on my bike.

I think you're right. My doc said that very thing...that I have likely had it for a long time without knowing. I'm not worried about it...I have every confidence that it will reverse or at least be only a minor hiccup to daily life...I am doing too many good things for my diabetes regarding diet and exercise and will only be doing more as time goes on.

I'm glad to hear you are continuing the conversation with your doc, seeing it through to a solution that works for you. You have me worried with the wine, though. I hope you can find out what is going on with that. Keep us posted!

Steph- Did the doc do labs and see if you were diabetic before putting you on Byetta? Could putting you on it when you didn't need it for diabetes cause sugar levels to look like you have it? Do they have a certain blood test for diabetes or just blood sugar levels? Just curious, I thought about asking my doc, but just wondering if it could cause something like that.

Of sorts. He ordered labs and prescribed in the same breath. He prescribed Byetta without results, which is likely closer to the answer you are looking for. They ran a whole panel to determine my levels, A1C as O2BTHIN stated. I got the results from the doc on Friday and I definitely have Type 2

Diabetes. Lucky me. I was sure that was not the case, but no luck. So he doubled my dose of Byetta. My Estrogen was bottomed out, too...which means it was robbing all of my Testosterone to convert to Estrogen and it still wasn't enough. So I got a shot of Testadial, which is a combo of Estrogen and Testosterone and have to go in every two weeks to have the shots continued. He prescribed BetaCaroteen doubled morning and eveing. He prescribed B12 injections given myslef at home on a daily schedule for at least two weeks, four times a week for for weeks, then twice a week as permanent maintanance dose ongoing. Is your doc a family doc? An internist? You will have better luck with an internist that doesn't address families (kids) and only deals with adults.

Quit this diabetes talk!! Lol. It runs deeply on both sides of my family, I've had issues with hypoglycemia for YEARS and in Sept my doc told me I was insulin resistant... I'm not really superstitious (sp?) but I'm worried ya'll will jinx me! I agree with Rhonda that some people stay away from the doc so that they can't be diagnosed. haha, that is totally ME!!

Oh so sorry, friend! We don't want to jinx you! Put your fingers in your ears (eyes? that won't work.) when we talk about it! LOL It sounds to me like you never got a difinitive answer or plan from your doc, either, regarding this subject. HMMM...what am I thinking right now? YOU KNOW!

:tt1::wub::thumbup::wub::rant::lol::mad5::mad3::crying::dupe::smile::tape2::boom::argue::hurt::bolt:

Ok so CLEARLY we got it figured out (well HE did) hehehe

Holli, Holli, Holli...that pic is phenomenal. But you can't throw one little hottie pic out there! We want MORE! You look AMAZING, girlfriend! And SO much younger! We want more pics, please! :tt2:

Stef... First, I want to know what your A1C was?! I think mine was 5.9 when I went (The normal range for people who don't have diabetes is 4.5 to 6.2, according to my hospital.) I was supposed to go back for more labs in FEB because my doc knew I'd had lap band and was hoping that the weightloss would reverse my insulin resistance. It's up to ME to make the appt for labs though, andI just 'haven't gotten around to it.' I'm not too anxious to have that label on me. I check my glucose levels at work a couple times a week, and I'm NEVER over 140's. No matter what I eat, or what time of day I check it... but that is largely the insulin resistance working for me. My pancrease shoots out large amounts of insulin to knock out the sugars in my body, often leaving me drained. haha.

Stop. Don't lecture me. I'm a medical professional. I'm supposed to ignore my own health in order to better care for others. It's what we do.

Hey I hate to flood the page today BUT i was just wondering if any of you know of or could help me out in finding out if there's a place that we can donate our loose skin when we're ready to have it removed?? Especially to burn centers. Just a thought that me and some other's here locally are thinking about but keeping getting "no's" when we ask!

I have no idea Holli, but thats a great idea. Unless they just don't use skin that has stretch marks... haha. I tease that I have no skin, I'm just one big stretch mark!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
