The first time I tried to have this done I was turned down. 5'7 240lbs with high blood pressure. My Ins bcbs of mi. But I have bcbs of IL and they are being nice with me helping me get everything in order with the doc.

Good luck everything should go good for you. I think they have changed alot now . The first time was two years ago.

At the consult they weigh you. I spoke to the surgeon who described the surgery to me and what it entailed, what I could eat, etc. etc. You can definitely lose 100 lbs in a year but that would be considered a fast loser. I am considered average at 52 lbs in 10 months. You can bet on 1-2 lbs a week if you follow the diet. Changes are because you are a man you will lose faster. Good luck with the consult. Julie

I was told that I could expect to lose 80-90 pounds the first year. I think what was actually said was 82% of the excess weight. Either way, that is a lot to lose.

I right now am still waiting for my approval through insurance. I did all of my consults, and have been turned down once, so I re-weighed, and re-applied. Just waiting for an answer.

Good Luck to you on your journey!!

Mike

:) I'm new at this and will post next week with my schedule. My BMI is 41, I;m about 100lbs over weight, have sleep apnea and take meds for high blood pressure. I understand medicare will pay 80%. My ins. does not cover. What do you think, will they take me?

Marvelous

Don't think I can answer that. It all depends on the insurance. I know some of them only require 100 pounds overweight with a BMI of 40. My insurance wants a BMI of 45, with at least 100 pounds overweight. Because I was 149 pounds overweight, with a BMI of 43.9, I was denied the first time I applied. So now I am appealing, made a bmi of 45.5, told the insurance I have slight sleap apnea, and am hoping for a better result this time.

Check with whoever will cover your surgery, see what they require, and go from there. That seems to be the way people are getting the surgery around here.

Good Luck

Mike

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
