I'm pre-op for gastric sleeve surgery. I will have all of my clearances completed (only psych and 2 NUTs required for me) at the very end of May.

Here's my question...neither my insurance nor my surgeon require any sort of pre-op diet. My advocate said it's easier on the surgeon if we don't go pigging out and gain a bunch of weight, but specifically said there's not a diet.

How do I/they know that my liver isn't enlarged and won't present a problem during surgery? I know he's doing it robotically--does that make a difference?

I've lost 7lbs on my own since March just trying to eat better.

I weigh 317lbs and have a high BMI. Just wondering if anyone else had no diet required and if it made any difference?

I did not have a pre-op diet, but was not allowed to gain anything or they would cancel surgery (I lost 6 lbs.).

Lots of people have no pre-op diet required. I would guess your surgeon is very experienced and knows what works best for him or her. If you don't trust your surgeon to decide about a pre-op diet, maybe this isn't the right surgeon for you?

I trust my surgeon. That's a big conclusion to jump to.

With the awesome info and experiences you find on this board, you also find horror stories that can be scary. I just finished reading through a thread about canceled surgeries because of large livers--and they'd already made the incisions and had to back out. There were several and I was just curious as to whether its technique, experience, or luck of the draw that determines liver size and how it affects operations.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
