It's official!!! I'm banded!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I have been home a few days now. I got banded on Tues 9/21 by Dr. Johnell in Greeley, CO. I was AMAZED at how much easier everything was than I had expected. I had never had any surgery before, and I think this went great. I'm a tad sore, but not in need of more pain meds. I stayed home all this week from work and will go back to work on Monday. SO, I'm pushing the liquids for now!

Some people are in the pre-op decision stage, and all I can say is this: find out as much as you can, talk to people on sites like this and with others you may know who are banded, and go for it if you are feeling ready!!! I also tried to get in the best shape I could for 4 months while waiting for insurance, etc., and I was doing at least 30 mins of cardio, weights, and 200 abs a day to prepare...and I think my level of fitness paid off! Hospital staff was amazed at how well I did walking, etc.

I was learly of having surgery, and now that I've done it, I can't believe I worried so much about it! I'd do it again in a heartbeat because now I am going to reap the rewards!!!!

Good luck!

Rose

Right on, Rose. What a great, upbeat post. Go easy on yourself. Some of us started feeling better, but then felt worse for a few days, so take it easy and welcome to the other side!

Woohooo, welcome Rose!! And congratulations on such a good surgery experience! I totally agree that trying to get into better shape BEFORE the surgery is definitely a leg up when the time comes. Can't wait to see how your weight loss goes!

Congratulations, Rose! I think the smartest thing you did was those abs. I know that helped you recoup faster. Take care and don't overdo. We don't want you to relapse. Best of luck!:)

Rose,

Pamper yourself this weekend. Don't overdo. Especially since you are planning on going back to work Monday. Take this time to get your liquids in and rest and some walking maybe. And don't plan much besides work this week.. When you come home from work don't have a zillion things you feel you have to do or get done.

I am not banded yet, but I have had many surgeries, so this is would be my advice even if you had had your tonsils out.

SO happy for you.

I am trying to imagine getting down on the floor to do those abs you did. What a gal. You rock. Cause I am sure that helped you tremendously.

I AM GETITING BANDED OCT 6TH. YOU HAVE JUST HELPED ME SO MUCH BY LETTING ME KNOW THAT IT WASN'T AS BAD AS YOU THOUGHT. I AM SO SCARED. O AM AFRAID THAT I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE PAIN. HOW ARE YOU FEELING NOW? AND HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WOKE UP AFTER SURGERY?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
