IS there anyone who's had sleeve surgery 50-70 years ago? Is there any studies about the long term affects on someone? I'm younger,28, so concerned a bit

I don't think anything like the SLEEVE was around50-70years ago! I do know they have data that is 10+ yrs post op. maybe longer.

The sleeve surgery has only been performed since 1997 and that is just an estimate. Since this surgery doesn't require FDA approval the data on the start date is just an estimate. The instruments used to do the surgery require FDA approval, the surgery itself does not. It was actually started as a pre-bypass surgery for people with VERY high BMI's.

I did do some research on long term effects as well - but since it's only been performed for such a short amount of time there isn't much data.

In my research, I have only found sleever who had surgery as far back as 2008, so 7 years. That being said I have personally meet a lady who had a band for 11 years and had it replaced with a sleeve about a year ago. She enjoys the sleeve compared to the band. Her feelings made it easier to choose the sleeve for me when its time for surgery.

Partial gastrectomy or removal of portions of the stomach has been around forever. The sleeve as a weight loss treatment is what is newer.

There was someone who posted on here a while back who said her dad had it back in the early 70's to treat h. pylori (which they treat w/ medicine now) and was fine for the rest of his life. I am sorry I can't recall the rest of the details but may be able to find with a search.

The sleeve is Not new it's been around many years it was original used for stomach cancer patients. Then they realized it would be good to help patients lose weight. Google it and you will be able to read all about it. Hope this helps!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
