What to do in social situations?

Recommended Posts

So, I got a promotion at work, and as a "surprise" my team decided to have a potluck in my honor. Which would normally be fine, except I'm on mushy foods and this thing is a taco theme.

I am not telling my coworkers about my surgery. And I can't skip this. It's in 30 minutes.

I've been eating soft foods with no problem and had some turkey and cheese for Breakfast this morning.

Should I try a few bites of taco salad? Ground beef? I'm freaking out and don't want to get stuck. I haven't cheated yet aside from progressing from full liquids to mushies a day early. I'm trying so hard to do this right.

This was the main reason I waited so long to get lapband; how do you deal with these situations without letting everyone know you're banded?

In my honest opinion I wouldn't try to eat beef t this point. You are still recovering from major surgery and it's extremely important to follow your dr.'s post-op diet so that there are no issues in the healing process. I know this is a tough situation and of course you don't want to disappoint anyone but the most important thing is for you to heal properly and when you start progressing too fast some times that can cause problems. So you may have to think outside the box on this one. So there will be cheese, sour cream and salsa I'm assuming??? Any refried Beans???? If so what I would do is take some refried Beans mash them up the best you can with your fork, top with cheese, sour cream and salsa and there you go. If there are no beans I would do the same thing but maybe stand in front of the meat like you're getting some and then quickly run for the cheese and put some one your plate. Once you start eating no one is going to examine what you have in your pile. I hope this works.

Congrats on your promotion!!!

Thanks. There were no Beans. I ended up getting a plate of tortilla chips with salsa, sour cream and tomatoes with some ground beef (which I was careful to pick around) Made small talk until my plate of chips turned to mush in its sea of Tomato sauce and carefully ate that.

I dread social functions with this band. That's going to be the biggest adjustment.

Don't dread social situations. Its just that the timimg of this one was bad:) After you are able to eat solids social events and restaurants with the band is no biggie. I eat out a lot and have no trouble. Just remember this is a lifestyle change so you have to know the things you can and can't live without. Its all about balance. Youll do great!!!!

Yes, don't dread! Once you're off your special diets, there will always be good choices to make. I feel liberated now because I'm not obsessed with food and overeating. I can actually enjoy myself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
