Smell and Taste? Did yours change?

Recommended Posts

My taste never changed. My sense of smell has never worked well ever since a massive sinus infection when I was a kid.

I've never heard of salmon having that much Protein. Most frozen and canned salmon is about 22-25 Protein grams per 3-4 ounces. Salmon does have more protein compared to other fish. Maui has only 60 calories and 15 protein grams per 6 ounce piece.

LOL I wish, but not even close. I love and hate exactly the same things I did before surgery and my cravings have not been mitigated in the slightest. The benefit is that a little bit of food will get me to stop thinking about food altogether for at least several hours. I don't tend to come down on the lucky side of these lotteries, but at least the surgery appears to be doing what it essentially guaranteed.

YES! I was "sleeved" on Dec 11 2013... and almost right away I noticed a change - I have always had keen sense of smell - but now... it’s crazy... and my sense of taste... holy craziness!

I use to LOVE bacon, pork chops, HAM… they use to be my very own food group… NOT anymore! Even tap water… I can taste the chemicals, so I do bottled (sigh)…

Really anything that has been processed has a funny chemical taste to me… like Pasta, bread etc… I can taste the flour and salt etc… CAKES… omg they are disgusting now, they are just grossly sweet… its really helped with my weight loss… because foods that I would “go to” are no longer appealing to me. I have lost 73lbs in 4 months… I don’t know if I would have, had it not been for my taste buds being completely different…

THAT IS AWESOME!!!! ????????????????

My sense of taste only changed for a couple of days, about a week after surgery. I couldn't tolerate any type of Protein drink, apple juice or applesauce but white grape juice was ok. Everything is back to normal now (6 weeks out). The list of foods I am allowed is still relatively narrow but I LOVE to smell food. I'll Detour and drive down streets with savory food smells every chance I get. It doesn't make me hungry but really satisfies this need to "experience" flavors.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
