Hungry at 3 days post-op?

Recommended Posts

I'll admit to some head hunger which is fairly easy to ignore, but this gnawing, growling, hollow feeling in my new sleeve???

I wasnt expecting to feel real hunger this soon after surgery, it's disheartening. I sure hope my doc will advance me to full liquids in Thursday at my post-op appointment, I think it may help with my uncomfortably rumbling tummy.

Is this normal???

I am not sure if the rumbling is normal but I am 4 days Post op and the bubbles are unending and uncomfortable. Perhaps this is still gas pain from the surgery, or our stomachs not fully agreeing with our food choices.

I do have one question though. What did you mean by full liquids? What are your cravings?

I am still on Clear Liquids only, for 1 week total. broth, Jello, Gatorade, Popsicles. Not very filling, lol. The next 2 weeks will be full liquids before moving on to purees. With full liquids I can add Protein shakes, applesauce, thinned cream of wheat, stuff that's a bit more filling.

I felt that way after surgery as well. About a week out the hunger seemed to subside and at 6 weeks out I have no cravings and I sometimes have to remind myself to eat.

Thank you for the encouragement! I am SO hungry this morning. ... It's nice to know it will pass. For now I have to find a way to distract myself from the constant gnawing. ..

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I got hungry about four days out and it never went away. I mean it does away after eating, but I get hungry pretty regularly.

It was pretty bad until I got on semisolids.

Thank you, at least I know what to expect, and that it's not abnormal. :)

Post-op appt today. ....I lost 13 lb in the first 6 days after surgery! Wow! The PA gave me instructions on what I can and can't do or eat for the next few weeks. Told me to start taking my Vitamins now. Advanced my diet to full liquids (Thank God! ). Told me to take the steri-strips off when I get home. I'll start putting Mederma cream on them to minimize scarring, even though the incisions are so small. I know I'm not going to end up looking like a supermodel, but might as well control what I can!

After we left the office my daughter drove us to Panera bread. I had her go in and see what kinds of Soups they had today. ..I didn't want to be tempted by all their delicious food. I ended up getting a Tomato Soup and a black bean Soup to go. They put some luscious-looking French bread in the bag with the soup; I ignored it (with great difficulty). I had been ravenously hungry for the past 3 days, so much so it was difficult to sleep. I had brought one of my tiny demitasse spoons from home, and I had some of the Tomato Soup right there in the car (I will puree the black bean soup later). I had tiny spoonfuls of soup, maybe 2-3 tablespoons total, and I was full and satiated. I waited at least 30 minutes before drinking because I didn't want to wash the soup out of my sleeve and be hungry again. After about an hour and a half I tried some SF chocolate pudding, since it is now allowed. I wasn't hungry, but wanted something chocolate. It's a tiny 3 oz cup and I slowly ate half of it and couldn't eat any more. Too full! If I had eaten 1 tiny bite more it would have been uncomfortable. It's been 4 hours since I had the soup; I am still nice and full. :) Wow I love my sleeve!

I'm 4 days out and I was HUNGRY starting the day after my surgery!! have been craving every thing under the sun. I'm on Clear Liquids until tomorrow when I can start my Protein drinks back up. I don't feel well as I'm in some pain and trying to figure out my Water intake.

Anyways...I want chicken. Lol

You sure it's not "head hunger"? I got actual, real stomach hunger but not until day 4 of clear liquid diet (no Protein shakes allowed). It was a raw, empty, rumbling feeling in my stomach that kept me awake at night. It went away a few days later after I got to eat a little Soup, and for a minute or two if I drank something.

That's not to say I haven't wanted to eat! I've been craving a Cheeseburger! But that's not true hunger for me, it's purely head hunger. If I have a little soup or applesauce it keeps me full for hours. I know the Cheeseburger would taste good, but no way am I putting it in my mouth or sleeve. .....OUCH.

I would normally say that it was head hunger because it usually is. I think it's a combo. I've got the rumbling and I'm definitely hungry for food. Not just the bad stuff.

Maybe the first couple of days was in my head. I will follow my plan too! This is way more worth it.

If it helps... I am on day 7 post op and I had the same horrible rumblings until day 6.

On day 6 I started to get sick of feeling like hell so I started talking my prilosec and anti nausea medication. I also picked up my walking to get rid of the gas. Someone on the forums here suggested walking and eating at the same time. That was a really helpful tool.

Seems like some people aren't hungry for weeks or months. Others are. I get hungry at 1 week out, but after eating just a small amount I'm full for hours.

It's a blessing and a curse, lol. So many things I want to eat/taste, so little room in my sleeve. But that's the point, right? :)

I just hope I can eat a little more as time goes on and swelling goes down. Right now I cant eat enough to sustain myself.

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between stomach hunger and mental hunger. Everything above that I've read is a normal response. I am day 3 pureed. The stomach hunger is minimal at the most. The mental isn't. We just got a new gas range/double oven 1 week before surgery and I'm wanting to cook on it, but its just the 2 of us and husb says not to worry about dinner. You sleevers above are doing great and right on track. One day at a time!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
