Hungry at 3 days post-op?

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 weeks post op and have to do liquids for one more week (thank god!). But I'm still kind of hungry after Soup or 8oz of Protein drink. Anyone else feel the same way? Hopefully I will be full when I start the purée stage

After a couple of days of being blissfully full after a little Soup, I find myself getting hungry a lot again. I'm guessing I've had more swelling go down in my sleeve, making more room. I think purees will make a big difference, as long as I stick to the rules and don't drink for 30 min afterwards so I don't wash it out of my sleeve.

Today is my 49th birthday. My family is genuinely distressed that they can't take me out to lunch or bake a cake for me. I didn't realize it would be so hard on them. They are far more upset about it than me! I wasnt counting on how hard these changes would be on them and I feel bad about that.

However, my grown daughter and my fiance both commented to me this morning that they can already see I've lost weight; it's noticeable! Wow. ....... Happy Birthday to me! :)

Distinguishing between mental hunger and stomach hunger is very difficult. I found that if I am constantly sipping on Water or Protein Water, I don't get that hungry (stomach). Also sipping on Gatorade low cal. My taste buds have changed too. Don't like the Protein shakes as well. Only using them and P. water to supplement in getting 60gm Protein a day. Day 4 of puree diet. Only proteint, no applesause, no baby food (less protein than a pureed boiled egg), then only 2oz. Still don't recomment pureed meatloaf. Like egg best. *Only* 11 more days of it! Keeping in mind that every physician is different, mine said I should only eat pureed Proteins first and 2oz only...every 3 hours. Gonna be a long 11 days!

Ever since my surgery I've been hungry as well. I'll eat my 4 oz. with added in unflavored Protein and an hour later, IM HUNGRY!! I'm sitting here going "WHY am I hungry? I JUST ate." I know some of it is mental because my mind is going 'That's not enough food' but I have gas pains every time I eat and drink. Maybe I'm eating or drinking too fast. I'm a week post op tomorrow, and I'm still trying to figure out what is what. I don't want to fail at this :(

I have found that if I take about 10 to 15 minutes per ounce it tends to go down smoother. I am on week 3 starting today. I put the spoon down with each bite. And with some fluids like regular Water, I still need to take tiny sips. You body is adjusting and trying to send messages that you are hungry, but it really is mind over matter.

Once you're on full liquids it gets better. You will get full, then a few hours later you will get hungry again but just eat a pudding or some applesauce and you will be fine. I suspect this will become less of an issue as our diets advance. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
